I reviewed 2 Packers games to see Safety Josh Jones.

I'll start with the summary and then go into the details:

Summary:
  • Physical Ability to play SS: A
  • Performance vs Pass: B+
  • Performance vs Run: B+
  • Physical Ability make tackles: A
  • Desire to make tackles: C
  • Rumored ego issues.
    • Ego should be reset after only getting practice squad job.
Games reviewed:
2018 Game 15: Started & Played 100% of the snaps.
2018 Game 16: Started & Played 55% of the snaps.

He was out most of the 2nd half in game 16. I assume he got dinged up.

He played:
  • Box Safety
  • Single-High Deep Safety
  • LB (A legit LB alignment even on 2nd and goal with about 5 yards to go).
  • Safety in 2-deep alignments.

Negative Plays: Minimal
Highlight Plays: Minimal

There were almost zero plays for any significant gain where I could put the blame on Jones.

There were almost zero plays that I would call highlights for Jones.

He appeared to be in the correct position at the correct time on about 99% of plays.

There were some plays where he did not fail but had a chance to "make a play" but didn't (i.e. Had a chance to make a tackle for loss that ended up gaining a yard or two).

He appears to have near-ideal physical ability to play as a modern day NFL Strong Safety (i.e. Can cover but also enough of a run defender that they used him at LB in some situations).

There were a couple of plays in zone coverage where he might have been a step late but it's really difficult to say for certain without spending a lot more time reviewing the Packers defensive scheme in 2018.

He did cover TEs 1-on-1 and looked OK doing it.

The primary negative was that he didn't play with energy.

He didn't look like what people would call a "high motor" player.

He generally made the tackles that needed to be made but he was not aggressive in doing it.

Media Reports:
It was reported that he wanted to be traded.
Reports indicated he thought he should be treated like a Star player.

Having been cut then only getting a practice squad job should reset any ego issues he might have had.

He might be a role player. Think Wilcox in 2016, the only year he had a positive impact. He could be a players if you have a specific role in sub packages, a role a that maximizes his abilities, he could be a positive performer for you

Underrated pick up. I'm not surprised this staff hasnt activated him, you know being that this defense is so complicated and all

I really liked him coming out of college, once again confirming my fallibility. Here's hoping the large slice of humble pie he has been served takes effect for the benefit of the cowboys.

I think we will add a SS starter somewhere in the offseason. But I think Jones could offer alot as a non starter next. I think he also the ability to be a hybrid SS/LB ala Neal and Buchanan

Good in run support, bad in coverage. How many safeties have we had with the same skillset here recently? In today's pass happy NFL he should be a career back up slash special teamer.

At least, Jones is a talent to put out there on the field, and he may have a decent shot at playing ok.

Yeah, I can agree w/ everything, except maybe the word "talent"!!!!!

They should have given him some snaps at SS against the Lions.

Thompson's tackling was terrible.
