Analytics says we should have gone for it twice in the red zone

Interesting article from Blogging the Boys says McCarthy was unusually conservative and it hurt us.

They say we should have gone for it on 4th and 3 at the TB 13 in the 2nd quarter and 4th and 3 at the TB 3 in the 3rd quarter.
I forgot about that first one, but the second one was egregious. People are focusing on the one at the end of the game, but if they'd gone for it earlier, it may never have come to that.

Oh, but Jerry knew about this when he signed McBurgers instead of an innovative younger coach.

McBurgers cost Rodgers and GB their 2nd Super Bowl berth by kicking two consecutive field goals in Seattle from inside-the-1 yard line on 4th and goal in the first quarter. 6-0, should have been 14-0. GB was averaging about 5 yards per rush carry that game. Proved to be more than the difference in the game.

And call what play? They wouldn’t have scored
Dak in shotgun with Pollard at tailback
Dak screams at the OL
Dak shifts past tackle
Pollard gets under center
Pollard receives ball from Biadasz
Dak scoots hard right into the right side of the endzone
Pollard hands off to Jarwin streaking from left tight end to under center
Jarwin throws touchdown to Dak Prescott.
6 points. BOOM

Its tough because we've been taught all our life "don't leave points on the board"....but our defense and these offenses out there? You have to do it smart. I'd do it to have momentum shift and put a light under our team specifically defense.

How many of you have called a play in that situation?????
I have. Many times.

Usually, quick slants, or a side levels kind of play, which gives an opportunity for multiple guys to catch TD pass at different points in their routes if they are spaced out properly.

Basically going for it from the 2 or 1 is always worth it analytically because you're pretty much guaranteed a punt and good field position near midfield or better if you don't convert, plus the added possibility of getting a safety (2 points) on defense.

Some people are just desperate to point the finger anywhere other than where it belongs... on the kicker.

yeah, but at that point the failed play is over....new down...so you have to make a decision. get 3 or go for it at the 2, having learned what doesn't work already (jarwin isolated in space for blocking). there would/should be a bevy of plays he can use down there....they played it safe........

But do you really think it freezes the safety enough for the play to work?

If we were winning by 10 points then I understand not going for it. But knowing we have to score points we likely should have went for it at least once.
