"@adbrandt: With Romo/Flacco and all NFL deals, pay no attention to the total value, just a number on a page. Even guarantee can be misleading."

"@adbrandt: Real question to ask when evaluating NFL deals: when can the team get out of it?Even for biggest deals, usually after two years."

"@adbrandt: Again, remember GB War room after '03 Draft, scout yelling "Anyone want to sign this kid Tony Romo? He's from Wisconsin?" Silence."

"@adbrandt: Cowboys known as "bonus-heavy" team - to prorate for Cap - so would expect substantial signing bonus. Romo was to make $11.5M this yr."

"@adbrandt: Timing is everything in negotiations. Romo blessed with emotional owner, Cap-strapped team unable to operate, last yr of contract."

"@adbrandt: Again, regarding today's contracts, Justin Verlander's $140 million is real; Tony Romo's $108 million is not."

"@adbrandt: Romo deal creates short-term Cap, adds millions to future stacked charges. Leverage gained for future, too much dead $ to cut."

"@adbrandt: Back in September, wrote here about value for pending extensions for Flacco, Romo and others: http://t.co/caZuxaUPCn"

"@adbrandt: Romo making 25M bonus, 1.5M salary, per @AlbertBreer. Cash number of $26.5M below Flacco's $30M and Brady's $31M for 2013."

These are the only 2 that naysayers have to read.

We saved $10 million on the cap by doing this deal? If I'm not mistaken.

Just further highlights that contracts are so complex anymore, that there really isn't any way for the average fan to have a really informed opinion about a deal.

Numbers like these are the key ones to look at in this deal.

I bet his cash number for 2014 will also be lower than Flacco's and Brady's.

Is this supposed to be an insult?

I doubt it. Not really Brandt's style. You can darn well bet that any team in need of a QB would be interested in Romo.

Oh, so that question was actually asked?

what it meant is that very few recognized Romo's potential. Luckily for us Sean Payton did and convinced BP. And then BP protected Romo during Jerruh's Henson love affair.

Romo needed those three years to be ready to start as he himself has admitted.

For once luck smiled on the Boys.

I don't think Brandt was insulting Romo. My read on it is he feels the GB front-office missed on Romo big time when he was working in Green Bay.

Makes sense. It was just oddly worded.

Brandt has told that story before to explain how even good front offices can completely misread a player's ability. It's definitely not an insult to Romo.

He was the GM in Green Bay at the time Romo entired the league. I figure he would know what happened in Green Bay's war room.

Quincy made it easy by falling off the wagon.

Andrew Brandt was the Packers' team VP never a GM. I recommend reading his articles as they are insightful...

My bad. I knew he was part of the org...assumed it was as GM.

I agree that his articles are great reads...and his twitter is a good follow.

He doesn't get caught up in the analysis schtick and focuses on the biz of the NFL.

That's exactly the point and the problem. I dont like that deal at all. And its getting worse as longer as i think about it.

Please someone give me a good argument pro this deal and some hope.
