My g/f just got the Droid X and that is a pretty bad azzzz phone. If Verizon doesn't obtain the i phone, I'll definitely be switching from BB to a Droid phone next spring.

The eventual end result will be 1 and only 1 platform. I don't care which it is. All I care is that the sooner we get to that end result, the better. Unfortunately for Apple, it will be an open source solution. Proprietary software is on the endangered list.

I don't think that will be the case. I think there's plenty of marketshare to come for both the two main players. Options other than those two? I can see those being squeezed out.

As all people here at CZ know. I'm an extreme Steve Jobs (and until he is gone from Apple) an Apple hater. Though I would never wish such an outcome. Competition is key to everything. Apple is good for consumers just as Android is good for consumers. The competition between the two is the best thing that could ever happen.

Agree in the short term, but not the long term.

All three of you are right. There's nothing special about the phone. It's not as if it's the most popular phone of all time and completely re-defined the market.

But, of course it is and it did. Obviously there are features that the iPhone does not, or did not have, that other phones have had. That's not the point. The point is that when it first came out it did more things in one device than any other phone and it did them all VERY VERY well -- better than how other phones did them. The experience was like nothing before. It basically revolutionized ("evolutionized"?) surfing the internet on a cell phone. And obviously the touch screen was a major development in the industry.

Yeah the touch screen was a major development when it surfaced on Palms and other devices almost 10 years before the iPhone. But I get what you're saying. :p

Now, the iPhone 4 is a step above the rest again. The resolution, the processing, the OS, the camera, the app store -- it's a combination of everything that makes the phone (for fear of playing into the Apple theme) "different" and better.

Finally got a chance to play with an iPhone 4 for awhile yesterday. First off, the screen is just fantastic. That retina display tech is great. But the screen is too small, after being used to my EVO it's just puny. Don't like the design, doesn't feel good in the hand with the sharp edges. Got bored with it after five minutes. Had my Evo since June 4 and can barely put it down. IPhone- "It is what it is." My EVO well, I still have yet to find out everything it is. It's a never ending journey of discovery.

Resolution- yes, better.
Processing- same level as current top end Android phones.
OS- Easy to pick up and use, because it's simplistic. Great for some, terrible for some. Boring for me and vastly inferior to Android IMO.
Camera- Rear cam- iPhone's upposedly better in real-time results, both good though and for me I don't really care, I'm not an expert on photo quality and my EVO pics are great. Front cam- EVO's is a lot better at 1.3mp compared to VGA, and more options with video chat on EVO/other Androids that will have a front cam like doing over 3G(or 4G) etc.
App store- Eventually Android will have more apps available, quality needs to get better but will happen. Both have so many, some exclusive to each.

I do have to say that the 5MP camera on the iPhone 4 is a lot better than my 5MP camera on the Moto Droid. It's not even close even though my camera is plenty enough for me.

But to compare it to the first Moto droid is unfair because the Moto Droid is fairly old and the iPhone is new, if you compare it to the Moto Droid X which came out around the same time as the 4, im sure it would be a ton closer, and might be ahead.

One other thing about the iPhone is that their "multitasking" is not really multitasking. I have an iPod Touch running on iOS4 and i can't go in and out of games and start up at the same spot like I do with my Droid.

Yeah iPhone's multitasking is really just "fast app switching." On my EVO I can be playing a game, go check a text or something, then go back to the same point in my game.

On a side note;

which android users have got their 2.2 updates yet?

I just received mine this morning.

There's an app called linpack which calculates how fast your phone runs and is calculated in MFLOPS (MegaFlops).

My 2.1 high was 4.643
My 2.2 high is 8.639

Phone is running at almost 2X faster after the update. Pretty sweet.

Odd, I just installed it on my Nexus One and ran it and it reported (2.2 Froyo)

MFLOPS: 34.26
Time: 2.45 seconds
Norm Res: 5.68
Precision: 2.220446049250313E-16

When I reported it, it said I ranked like 18 thousand and something.

Nope, when I received the Nexus, it was Android 2.1. The update to Froyo was done via Google. I didn't do it myself.

There is no need to root my phone since it's the Nexus One. It is already completely open.

Looking at some of the other phones listed in that link. There are definitely some phones that produce much higher MFLOPS than others.

I currently run a Motorola Droid with Cyanogen Mod RC3 on it. It's also got a nice low voltage 1.2 Ghz kernel courtesy of p3droid. This this is a beast with this kernel and rom and the battery life is really good.
