As it turns out, there are worse things you can do with a bottle of champagne than spray it into a crowd of strangers.

Giants cornerback Geoffrey Pope faces felony charges in Detroit after allegedly hitting a man over the head with a champagne bottle.

The victim is the son of a local television anchor, and he took 28 stitches to the ear.

Pope was celebrating his birthday. We hope that, when he blew out the candles, he wished for a good defense lawyer.

POPE WANTS AN APOLOGY
Posted by Mike Florio on June 23, 2008, 7:17 p.m.

A statement has been released on behalf of Giants cornerback Geoffrey Pope, who was cleared of responsibility in connection with a man who was busted in the head with a champagne bottle over the weekend.

The victim is the son of an anchor on Channel 4 in Detroit, and Pope is asking for an apology, due to Pope’s belief that the station blew the matter out of proportion.

“Pope feels that he was being targeted because he is on a high profile team,” the statement reads. “He feels he deserves an apology from Channel 4 news because of how intense they made the situation.”

Pope was cleared after another suspect stepped forward and took responsibility for the incident.

“After pleading with the Detroit police and letting them know that he wasn’t the suspect, Pope was arrested under false accusations,” the statement explains. “The suspect came forward Sunday, June 22nd and turned himself in.”
