I apologize for being about the 4th person to start a thread this week about the kicker of all people.

Couple of us at work today got to talking about Maher and his comparative success on long range goals vs. medium range. It gave me a peculiar thought lol, curious what you guys say.

Let's say Dallas needs a field goal to win and is at the opposing 38 yard line, so a kick (I think) of about 55 yards. Let's say that between play clock and timeouts, you've got time for two more plays.

For Maher specifically, would you consider kicking the 55 yarder instead of running a couple plays and turning it into something mid range?

Basically, would you gamble on Maher actually being better at long kicks and make him kick the long one, or take the shorter one everytime?

I'm giving him the shorter one personally but i think it's interesting to imagine that Maher might actually be the one kicker who would want the 55 yarder.

didnt we have another kicker, Murray, who was better with longer kicks than shorter kicks?

I think his stats will tend to revert to the norm over time. Remember the "snap infraction" penalty that moved the ball back 5 yards to make it a 51 instead of a 46 yard FG (IIRC) and then bounced off the upright? Five yards was the difference between "Good" and "No Good". I'll opt for the closer attempt every time.

Take a couple shots at end zone
I’d rather just score and see if he can make extra point

You always want closer

I'd want it as close as possible. I'd also bring in a hypnotist to implant the suggestion he can make short FGs.

Hypnosis

I always wonder what if you kept your kicker in a tent all game and forced him to meditate until called upon haha

Good points all around.

Don't be apologetic. Whoever doesn't like another Maher thread can avoid the thread or get over it. Rock on.

That runs the risk of an INT. I’m not opposed to throwing, but try something mid distance first, and if that works then try for the end zone. If not, throw for a shorter gain to improve FG range b

Sure
Take what there
But don’t play for the FG
Try to score
If you got time for two plays of 20 that works

-------didn't we have another kicker, Murray, who was better with longer kicks than shorter kicks?

We had Murray toward the end of his career....he had VERY limited range when we had him. I'm not sure we let him try anything over about 48. But yes, he was accurate for us.

Murray was money from 50 in.

Go back and watch his kicks....a few of them would have missed if he were 5 yards further back....

In this case every inch counts!
