NFL | Moon charged with DUI again
Sat, 26 Jan 2008 07:13:47 -0800

ESPN.com reports former QB Warren Moon has been charged with driving under the influence stemming from a traffic stop in December. According to police, Moon was driving an SUV with expired plates when he was pulled over Dec. 28 in Medina, Wa. A police officer smelled "intoxicants" in the vehicle, and Moon refused a field sobriety test and a breath test. He was arrested for investigation of DUI and driving with a suspended license and was released later the same day. Moon is scheduled for arraignment Feb. 5. This is Moon's second alcohol-related incident in the last year. In August 2006, Moon pleaded guilty to negligent driving as a result of a DUI arrest in April.

Is it me or does a lot of problems with professional athletes stem from being pulled over with expired plates and drivers license's? Or in this case a retired pro player.

What's up with that?

Maybe skating on the DUI here led him to believe he could also do so in the future. This would never happen in Texas where it's treated as the serious crime that it is.

At the macro level degenerate alcoholics don't take care of those thinks. License, regestration, emission renewals etc expire. Cars are usually not maintained and driving around with broken headlights and tail lights etc. All red flags that get them stopped in the first place.....

Moon needs to be locked up for awhile.

Im just glad to hear that he wasnt naked at a Wendys drive thru lol.

And as for Moon being a first ballot HOF something about 17 seasons 50,000+ yards and 300+ TD's. But other than that I find it a head scratcher too?

those numbers are fine and dandy, but being a first ballot hall of famer is reserved for greatness, he wasnt greatness.

Well only 5 more QB's have thrown more career TD's and only 3 QB's have thrown more yards all time. I mean, would you have been more comforatable with him getting in on a second ballot??

that is a fair question. I dont know what ballot he deserved to be on. I just dont think he was a first ballot no brainer hall of famer.

Look at vinny testaverde's numbers and then look at moon's, I just dont see much difference.

Now moon was trailblazer and made the league realize that a good quarterback is a good quarterback regardless of race, so In that aspect I applaud him. And if that is the reason he went in so quickly then I can sort of understand it.

But for his numbers alone, mixed with a number of off the field legal issues and some pretty poor playoff games, I dont know how he is a first ballot hall of famer.

Maybe Aikman going in the same year helped him out a little bit. In the fact that his numbers werent as high as Moons but his averages were good and his career was cut short. Aikman had the playoffs and superbowl wins to help him out too.

Maybe they feel they would have been scrutinized had Aikman gone in and Moon didnt. I dont know, maybe... They both deserved it no doubt.

Moon also was one of the 1st Black QB's to break the mold about being a passer so part of it had to do with the doors he opened for other Black QB's in the league

Warren Moon's stats:

url: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MoonWa00.htm

comments:

Warren Moon was a 9 time Pro Bowler and a 3 time All Pro. He lasted, as people said, 17 seasons and threw for close to 50,000 yards. But *before* that, he had to go to the Canadian Football league and win 5 consecutive Grey Cups there and then come back to the states. In his day, "Black QB" was a euphemism for "wide receiver" or "tight end". In the NFL he was not an immediate smashing success (even though he was well liked in Houston).

But when a guy at age 34 throws for more yards than anyone not named Fouts and Marino, people should stand up and take notice. He threw for more yards at age 35. He was still throwing for a remarkable amount of yards at age 41 in Seattle (and *that* year, he was the Pro Bowl MVP). It wasn't just the longevity. It was the fact that Warren Moon was a latter day George Blanda. Moon was special because he had two professional football careers, and both were pretty damned good. Not many people are effective quarterbacks at the age Moon was.

Now with the watering down of the pass defense rules, a number of people have come along and passed for more than 4690 yards. But in context, in its time, 4690 yards by a 35 year old should make you take notice, and that he played well for *six more years* should too.

The irony is, for a guy who had to have taken care of himself during his career, to have lasted as long as he did, Warren doesn't seem to be doing so now. But I'd suggest that the wreck a player makes of his life after football really shouldn't be factored into what he did on the field. If so, then someone needs to take away the HOF elections of guys like Pittsburgh center Mike Webster.

David.
