Norv Turner does not look or act like a man who envisions himself coaching the Raiders in 2006. But one game remains in a disastrous season, and Turner on Monday deflected questions regarding his future, trying to turn the focus back on the last meaningless contest. Already, Oakland's season is ignominious: winless in the division for the first time since 1963; no shot at avoiding a third consecutive losing campaign; no significant improvement since a Nov. 20 victory at Washington. With head-coaching vacancies possible in places such as Kansas City, St. Louis, New Orleans, Dallas, Houston, Minnesota and with the New York Jets, the Raiders are likely to sit tight and let the openings unfold before casting Turner aside. Art Shell, now working the NFL's front office, has expressed an interest in coaching again. He was a no-nonsense 54-38 in six seasons (1989-94) in his previous stint as the Raiders' head coach. But Davis had no faith in him then. Why would he now? If the Raiders decide to part ways with Turner, they may end up calling back a former candidate, Maurice Carthon, the former Cowboys offensive coordinator who now has that title with the Browns. He interviewed in January 2004, eventually losing out to Turner. And Pat Hill, a former NFL offensive assistant in Baltimore and Cleveland who has been a huge success at Fresno State the past nine seasons, is certain to be considered.
