My entire family smoked so I was kind of born into it, which is about the best excuse I have for ever starting. I finally quit as of the 20th of this month after 20+ years of smoking. I'm using an electronic cigarette (one of the high end ones) and it's made all the difference in the world. I've never quit this long without some sort of substitution tobacco.

Vaporizers are the way to go if you are going to smoke anything. It shouldn't really harm your health. No burning of the lungs at high temperatures, getting excess junk down your throat, etc...

Do you put tobacco in those and vaporize it? Or do does it just have nicotine?

I always thought e-cigarettes were just tobacco vaporizers.

No, it isn't tobacco at all. What you're vaporizing is what is commonly referred to as 'juice'. It's a liquid solution made up of nicotine, vegetable glycerin and/or propylene glycol, and flavoring. Nicotine in and of itself is not dangerous, unless you have access to it in an unadulterated form and ingest it as a pure undiluted liquid. Nicotine is actually found naturally in eggplant, but I digress.

Big Tobacco is trying to lay down the hammer on it because it's costing them a lot of money. You can't regulate it as tobacco because it isn't. The end result is that you're exhaling water vapor. Compare that to the 600 ingredients in cigarettes — 4,000 compounds when burned, according to the American Lung Association — including acetone, formaldehyde, tar, benzene, butane and lead, and there really is no comparison.

It's definitely by far the best alternative to smoking. Didn't realize they used this 'juice' though. That's interesting.

The best alternative to smoking is not smoking, but I kid. :)

I'm actually glad these things weren't around when I quit smoking because I would still be addicted to nicotine and I'm sure if I ran out of the juice I would fall back on cigarettes (I've seen it numerous times with smokers, my mother for one).

Besides my health, the additional driving force in making me want to quit was the slavery of getting an injection of nicotine within a specific time frame. I hated worrying about how long a movie, a flight, a meeting, or any other time consumings task that would delay my fix. I didn't want to start spazing out after an hour without a smoke. Naturally there were times when I couldn't get a smoke until hours between cigarettes and I hated every minute of it. It was about all I could think about during those times. It sucked.

I don't smoke and never have. I don't get the attraction.

Having said that, I think most of the non smoking ads we see on TV are obnoxious. In Thailand, this ad ran and I think it actually hits a home run.

Nicotine is supposed to be the toughest addiction to quit. Key is dont start.

My mom died from lung cancer...I am the only one in my family who didn't smoke. I just feel it is a dirty habit. I have friends who have gone back to it after stopping 15 years ago and now both of there kids are smoking.

I believe to each there own, just don't blow it my way

My dad was a two pack a day smoker for about 50 years. Lung cancer got him last year. I calculated he smoked about 720k cigarettes in his life. If you keep putting a carcinogens in your body they will eventually defeat strong genes.
