Gates' production as a receiver has been easily superior. Six straight seasons with 8+ touchdowns is just phenomenal (Witten's career high is 7).

A large part of that is the system and the other receiving targets on the team, but that's just the way it goes. If you put up the numbers, you're going to get more accolades than someone who doesn't. Witten is a much better blocker and perhaps the better all-around tight end, but numbers like Gates has will always get more attention.

Gates and Witten both produce. Gates just does it at a higher level than Witten is capable if doing.

Gates is much more athletic than Witten is, he's basically a big receiver. Witten is an athlete in his own right but not the best after the catch and he's not going to jump over someone and snatch the ball at its highest point in the endzone. Gates is craftier in the open field as well, so he can find his way into the endzone after the catch.

I think they are both amazing tight ends, but not so surprised Gates got the nod here over Witten.

Yeah just like INTS are supposedly all there is about CBs. Morons.

All around TE there is no question Witten is better and should have been picked.

That is not a good comparison. Gates is good at more than just one facet of the game. He is not a good blocker, but he is not a bad blocker, either. He is great at making big plays. He is great at running after the catch. He is great at scoring touchdowns. He is a very deserving player. Witten has become a great blocker, but he didn't start out that way. It took him about three years to develop into the blocker he is now. I think it is a toss up and there is nothing wrong with being the 3rd best tight end of the decade.

ALL AROUND TE Witten has been better for several years. I have watched Gates and he is NO WAY NEAR as good a blocker. Add to that Wittens toughness and reliability and see how more times Gates is shut down compared to Witten and its clear to me that Witten has the overall edge.

Splitting hairs. They're both fantasic players and you could find a reason to justify either of them.

Eh...I think you'd be hard pressed to find another era where there have been so many good TEs in the NFL as the last decade. That being the case, if you believe my initial statement that is, somebody good is going to be left off this list.

Whoopie de doo. So what? Gates has also been playing more years. except for this year, the gap is not usually that wide.

If the word "all-around" was attached to the position, then the pick would be Witten ... and I'm not sure anyone else would even be close.

But since it does not, then Gates is a good pick.

There's no criteria that says the tight end has to be a great blocker AND great receiver to be eligible.
