Giants placed MLB Antonio Pierce on injured reserve with a bulging disc in his neck, ending his season.

A neck specialist informed Pierce last week that he wouldn't need surgery, but the Giants apparently couldn't hold his roster spot any longer. Chase Blackburn will finish the year starting in the middle. Beat reporter Mike Garafolo suggests that Pierce's Giants career may be over. The 31-year-old has declined over the past two seasons, and is due $4.75 million in 2010.

Whatever. He's overrated as they come.

Giants said our injuries last year were no excuse, so I expect the same to ring true on their end.

The Giants defense will be without its vocal leader for the rest of the season.

Ten days after the Giants surprisingly announced Pierce was out indefinitely with a bulging disk in his neck, the team placed him on injured reserve Monday.

As Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger points out, this could potentially spell the end of Pierce's time with the Giants. Chase Blackburn will start in his place the rest of the year.

An undrafted free agent that grew up under Gregg Williams in Washington, Pierce proved to be an excellent free agent signing by former Giants G.M. Ernie Accorsi.

Pierce only missed four starts at middle linebacker in his first four seasons in New York, but his play started to decline after the team's Super Bowl season. He's due $4.75 million in 2010.

i wouldnt say he is overrated, remember he changed defensive signals twice on one particular play, with a key intereception when romo was changing signals too;

Now with their star safety phillips out for year and pierce out for year, then this will hurt them; Now with justin tuck being said not able to raise his arm above his shoulder too and osi not completely back yet, this really hurts the giants along with eli having that stress foot problem.

That's a pretty sizeable loss, though he's been out for a few weeks now. Either way, it's good news for us; I'd much rather face Blackburn.

He is lucky this injury was found now before something more serious happened.

Pierce hasn't been the same since the whole Plaxico shooting incident last year. I remember he was getting burnt regularly whether on running plays or passing plays late in the season last year and this year he has had trouble staying healthy. It sucks to see someone having to go on IR.

Wasn't that what ended Moose's career?

Pierce's play may have dropped off a bit, but that guy is *not* overrated. He was a hell of a player for the Giants, and the Sk*ns were idiots to let him walk. He's also a leader on that defense. That's a big loss.

I live in NY and watch every Giants game. Pierce is overrated. for a player who I think is so football smart he doesn't make any plays.

Overrated as a playmaker, maybe.

But as the captain of that defense and a guy who gets the guys around him in position to play better, he isn't overrated.

More heady than physical at this point but that is a big loss.

Pierce isn't overrated. Anyone who thinks he was doesn't know football. It wasn't just his play that was important even though it wasn't great, it is the other things he did that were even more important.

I also think that he may be done with the Giants. The Giants will probably look towards youth at MLB. That search may begin with Goff.

And there are no excuses with injuries for the Giants. Aside from the injuries they have endured, the players who are playing are not playing the way they have been in the past. And that starts with the O and D lines. Snee and O'Hara were the first ones to admit that.

Oh, he's a nice coach-on-field type, but I can't think of a single thing he does well otherwise.

Not a big hitter. Not fast. Can't cover. Can't shed blocks.

Sure talks a good game, though.
