Any Backyard gardeners?

I just ordered a heirloom seed kit and am getting ready to build some raised beds. I haven’t really had a large garden in the past and I was wondering if it was too late for me to plant some Broccoli, Cauliflower, Lettuce, and Cabbage. I’ve read you should start seeding 6-8 weeks before the Last Spring Frost (which in my area is about 4/15), but I think I’m going to try to sprout the seeds and give it a go anyway. Anyone ever plant late or just want to give some gardening advise?

I want to try growing a few things in buckets this year, just to see how we do.

I can't really plant a true garden because we have a huge amount of deer that will eat anything and everything. I figure I'll keep the buckets on the deck and cross my fingers that the deer can't climb the stairs.

Maybe eventually I'll invest in some sort of greenhouse structure if I want to expand the amount I grow.

I've always had good luck with peppers. Mixed luck with tomatoes. Bad luck with berries.

Yes, I love small back yard gardening. I like growing my own salsa materials especially.

Last year I saved some 5 gallon buckets and gave them to a friend who lives in an apartment so he doesn't have a back yard. But he has a balcony so he planted in the buckets and grew his own vegetables.

Nothing is better than a just picked tomato with a little salt.

I want to try growing some Campari tomatoes. I had to save/prep seeds from tomatoes we got at the store because I couldn't find anyplace to purchase them.

They are so delicious and sweet. Cross your fingers that my seeds don't suck.

It may be too late to plant seeds for a lot of cool season crops but we're in central Texas where it gets very hot early in the year. Tomato and pepper seeds are usually started indoors before Christmas and set out after danger of frost so we often plant sets we get from greenhouses. My wife set out her cabbages from sets about six weeks ago at the same time we set out our onions and potatoes. Further north you can get away with setting out seeds later than we can. They will probably grow OK but may not put on fruit as early.

It is best to get advice from gardeners in your local area. Plants mature earlier in the south than they do in the north. It's easy to strike up a conversation with gardeners as almost all are happy to talk about it and may even give you some seeds. First, decide whether you are going to grow organically or with chemical fertilizers and pesticides so a little research is recommended.

Be prepared to earn your food by the sweat of your brow but it is so much better than store bought that you will not want to go back. We raise or grow most of our own food. We no longer buy food that is not organically grown.
