A lot of people got turned on to bluegrass music after the "Oh Brother Where Art There" Soundtrack. Here's the complete version of the most famous song from that soundtrack. Watch the guitar picking closely. It's really wonderful.

Man of Constant Sorrows

Some others may remember the Darling family from the Andy Griffith Show. Their real name is The Dillards. The had some wonderful bluegrass songs. I happened to stumble across these last night. The lyrics on the first one really are really haunting in some ways. Really good.

There is a Time

Dooley

Doug's Tune

No discussion of bluegrass would be complete without a couple by Allison Krauss and Union Station. Her voice is so pure. She's done some great country stuff too, but bluegrass is her forte'. She plays a pretty good fiddle.

I'll Fly Away

Choctaw Hayride

And of course, the masters, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs.

Foggy Mountain Breakdown. If you look closely you'll see several country stars picking with them, and one very talented comedian too. These suckers can all flat out play.

Randy Lyn Rag

Not quite bluegrass but the same kind of picking from Jerry Reed and the best guitar player ever, Chet Atkins.

Jerry's Breakdown

Then just because I want to post it. Chet Atkins on the great Mason Williams hit.

Don't listen to it very often, but I have plenty of it on my hard drive, and plenty of respect for it. Gave birth to rockabilly, rock n roll, punk rock....hell damn near all of the music I listen to.

Something about Krauss' voice puts me in a vegetative state...but in a good way.

I had not heard the 1st one. I liked it.

I had a thing for Deanna Carter after her song Strawberry Wine came out. Man there was something about her in that black top in that video and the words of the song.

The Carter family are definitely icons of country and bluegrass.

When I lived for a time in Winston Salem, North Carolina there used to be a little amphitheater downtown and on Wednesdays they had live bluegrass music during the lunch hour from 12 to 1. Man, that was fun.

Outside of town there was a steakhouse called The Pollirosa where they had country music and bluegrass all the time. The guy who took me there the first time was named Mr. Lawrence. I can't remember his first name. The band saw him and called him up away from the dinner table to play with them and man alive could he entertain. There was a fiddle player there they called "Old Timer" and he could play with a toothpick. When Mr. Lawrence came back to dinner I told him he was really good. He said he'd had offers from Nashville but never took him. He liked construction. Blew my mind.

BTW is Classical Gas just a nice way of calling someone an Old Fart?

I love Bluegrass.

Some of the current guys like Marty Stewart, and Ricky Skaggs have some good stuff out. Ricky's Soldier of the Cross is a Christian Bluegrass cd that we feature many of the cuts on our show.

IF you want to listen to the queen of Bluegrass check out Rhonda Vincent.

Del McCuory band as well.

Good story.

PBS did an "American Experience" episode I caught a few years ago, on the Carter Family and especially A.P. Carter.

Carter was known for traveling extensively throughout the country and collecting and blending songs, particularly from Appalachian and African American musicians. It was pretty entertaining.

Oh, is that right? Well if he's opened for Keen down here, he should surely have a following.

Wouldn't surprise me if he's got a good fan base down in Austin. He'd be a perfect act for Austin's SXSW Festival that just passed the middle March.
