I found an encased set of 1943 steel pennies. It has 4 pennies in it. 3 are facing front and 1 is facing back showing the wheat cent. On the front on the left is a drawing of Abe Lincoln and superimposed over it is the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. There is also another soldier behind them with arm raised. The back is all black with a description of why steel was used as an emergency.

I was wondering if this is a good find, or fairly standard?

I used to collect coins when I was a kid, so your question intrigued me... I went searching, and have been able to find some sites that sell a 3 steel penny Iwo Jima collectors set, but nothing like you describe... FWIW, these sets seem to retail for a little under 15 bucks...

The battle of Iwo Jima was feb and march 1945. These are 1943 ?

There are a couple of sites you can google. My day collected coins and I know a little about them. What condition is the casing and the coins? How do they look? That is the key in how much they are worth.

As regards being rare, not so much.

I know when it was. Does that prevent them from using the image? Lincoln wasn't the President in 1943 either, but he's on the picture too.

The coins look pristine and so does the case.

Mind you, I don't really want to sell it, I was just curious as to worth.

I think the point Cliff was making is that you can't have Battle of Iwo Jima coins made in 1943 if the battle didn't even happen until two years later in 1945.

It is an image. They aren't Iwo Jima coins, it's just a picture on the case that depicts WWII.

I have a lot of old coins but I get them by accident. Couple occasions when getting change back I noticed the jingle of change sounded strange when I retrieved it from my pocket it turned out the quarter they gave me was a 1938 Silver quarter. When I took it to a coin shop the guy there was willing to give me 150.00 bucks for it but I choose to keep it. I have several other old coins that I have stumbled on over the years

When people find a silver colored 1943 penny, they are often surprised, thinking they have found a great rarity, since all U.S. pennies are copper. Aren't they?

Answer: The 1943 silver colored penny is a wartime issue made of steel, and coated with zinc. During World War II, copper was so badly needed for the war effort (to make shell casings) that the U.S. penny was made out of steel that year, which is why most 1943 pennies are silver colored. They are worth about 12 to 15 cents each in ciruclated condition, and as much as 50 cents or more if Uncirculated.

I have to say I have never seen one and while it may not have great value it is clearly something I would keep if I were you

The only coins I collect are bicentennial quarters and wheat pennies. Not exactly sure why I do. If I see them, I toss them in a bowl I keep on my night stand.

I'm sure whoever made the set wanted to use steel pennies because of their connection to the war effort, and of course in 1945 or 1946 there would have been plenty of them around...

But kudos for knowing your WWII history...

The coins are not "Iwo Jima" coins, they're regular steel pennies... it's the display case that commemorates Iwo Jima...

There's no reason they couldn't use 1943 steel pennies even if the set was put together in 1945 or 1946... steel pennies were synonymous with the war, it would be a natural decision to use them...

I've got a 1952 Ben Franklin half dollar that I keep as a good luck charm (I was born in 1952)... I've heard it's worth as much as 50 cents...
