Any actual ideas as to how to remedy performance? Cowboys look like they have for many of the past several seasons. Good enough to clobber terrible teams (yes, there are easy teams to play every season as several end up between 0-6 wins each year). Not good enough to consistently win against the better teams and make a real push towards a Super Bowl.
Are you a fan that:
1. Believes new superior coaching automatically makes this team a super bowl contender.
2. Believes a new better QB immediately makes this a Super Bowl contender.
3. Believes a change in management is necessary to incrementally build a perennial contender.
4. Believes that there is no reason to think in these terms, so why try to comprehend them and go have some food and drink (don't forget to yell Go Cowboys!).
My general thoughts are that the team is not close to as talented as many believe. Nor are they coached by a superior coach. They do benefit from a consistent approach with regards to talent acquisition and same system. Players in general seem to understand where they are supposed to be at any given time. But diverse and exotic tactics such as being ready for adaptive changes and real time adjustments seem like too much to ask from this staff (and much of its talent). The team does not like to make major adjustments that can cause major shakeup and domino effect changes. Get a dominant run stopping defensive tackle and accept less pass rush. Focus on gap contain and do not try to generate pressure so much with twists and stunts (this would basically waive goodbye to Marinelli).
The QB and receivers spent significant time together this off-season and the passing game has benefitted from it. The QB delivers way too many balls behind receivers when receivers are on the move. On crossing passes and post routes this causes lots of tipped balls as the receiver tries to reach back and make the catch. Yes the receiver bears some burden (perhaps as high as half) whenever this happens to either catch it or knock it downward. But it still speaks to accuracy lacking from the QB, and turnovers that they played a heavy role in.
The running game was better this game as crowd noise let the blockers coordinate better and play adjustments easier to communicate. Turnovers happen, but this team does not generate lots of them. And has not for years.
Trade for a bad azz defensive tackle? How high of a pick? Who would be available at trade deadline to help? Lots of trouble stopping the run between the tackles the entire season thus far.
They may turn it around, and make all this look silly but currently the team looks pretty similar to past squads. Very good against inferior competition. Meh against evenly matched squads and the potential to impress and disappoint against top teams. A team in short capable of making it to a divisional playoff game and compete, and a team that falters too many times in the schedule and ends around 8-8 ish.
A general manager that hires family and friends and desires comfort, ego massaging, money, and above all loyalty. One with zero hot chair. The comfort goes on to drafting, signing, hiring coaching and personnel etc. Though the approach at least has been consistent and they did rebuild the offensive line and make it a priority. But that alone will not win the thing... Big time head coaches will not be able to coexist for long under Jerry (if he can even hire another now). They have as much need for ego massaging as him and sometimes more.
This is a song that never ends...
