My speech is less than 2 weeks away. I was told it was supposed to be 3 minutes long so had an awesome speech prepared, had everything I wanted to say and then get a letter last week stating the speech is now 2 minutes long. Pros and cons to it -- had to shorten my speech up, but one less minute I have to be up there freaking out.

I have the speech memorized and I should be able to say it stumble free by the 10th -- I hope. You get docked by judges if you go over and some dock if you have your speech with you. Depending on how fast I say it -- I'm either right at 2 minutes or have 7-10 seconds to spare. I'll probably say it super fast when I am up in front of everyone so I shouldn't have any problems going over.

I wrote it so I could change it up a bit as I catch myself saying old parts of my speech before I revised it and it still sounds well.

On top of the speech there is a judging question where we pull a question out of a hat. I don't want to pull a Carrie Prejean moment or anything like that Miss Teen USA clip that was posted. I doubt I will, but that's hard when you don't know what any of the questions are.

I'm going up against one other woman. I have a 50/50 shot of winning.

Nervous doesn't even begin to tell you how I feel. I have like 20 people coming to support me and I don't know if we will all fit. Our pageant is in a little conference room. The high school took the day away from the coordinator last minute after she booked it a long time ago. Having it in a room as opposed to a gym or auditorium kind of messes up my first line, but I'll make do.

Other than having a few shots before going up there -- how do you get rid of the nerves or at least calm them down a little bit? Because on the 10th I'll be freaking out!

I was never good at reading speeches however I was good and making speeches as long as I had notes to remind me of main points of topic and facts I wanted to hit on.

instead of thinking of it as a speech and being nervous try to think of it as
an opportunity to tell a lot of people about something that is important to you. other than that i have no words of wisdom because speaking to a group has never really freaked me out.

Breath!

People forget to breath for short periods of time without realizing it or only take shallow breaths when they are nervous or anxious which compounds the problem.

There are a lot of breathing techniques out there and you can search for some online and try them. Tthe link below provides a couple of suggestions for different purposes.

You will be fine.

I have to talk all the time in court and do teach classes, CLE courses and bigger events too.

It is easier than you think.

Just forget there are people listening and be yourself.
