Greasy Tony's, a Tucson institution is for sale. The founder of Greasy Tony's died of a heart attack in June at the age of 78. They filmed some scenes from the movie there and a documentary about music in Tucson called "High and Dry" had a lot of scenes there. The house right next door was a haven for musicians and Tony loved them and they loved his food.
Great cheesesteaks and pizza.
Tony's family had closed the place until they decided what to do. The For Sale sign tells me an institution near the U of A Campus is gone for good.
Tony was an interesting guy. No checks, no credit cards, no debit cards. Cash only. His phone was a pay phone and customers could only use it for 3 minutes in case he got a call.
I guarantee you would have liked Tony though. He had a sharp wit, loved jokes, and he enjoyed seeing your reaction to the first bite.
The sign on the front of the store used to have a slogan, "no charge for extra grease."

The story that made the circles here was that he loved cheesecake and was driving through town in search of some. He wasn't satisfied with it, so he decided to stay and open his own restaurant.
