Any watch collectors on the forum.

I’ve started to get into the watch game and I can tell I’m going to regret because I keep wanting to buy one watch after the other.

If you are a collector, tell me what you have? What’s your daily or grail piece?

I am not really a watch guy but over the years I upgraded my dive watches as financials increased. I finally got the one I always dreamed of…..a Rolex Submariner about 10 years ago.

My everyday watch, which I rarely wear, is a Bulova with a blue crystal face.

The Submariner is a cool arse watch. 95% of all divers look like derivatives of the Sub. They are outrageously overpriced at this point though. I’d like to add a black dial Sub at some point to my collection.

The sad part is the dive watch isn’t even needed these days. Computers take care of everything but it was a goal of mine since I got my scuba license at 16. It sits in a box in my safe for years now

I have a quite impressive antique pocket watch collection.

I don't even pay attention to the time when I dive unless I do a decompression dive. My dive computer does all the work.

I’d say 90% of all divers look watches are never worn on an actual dive, lool. I think most folks just like the look and use them as tool watches.

That’s kinda of the running joke when you hear people debating the specs “oh, that watch is only good to 200 bars…this one is good to 300 bars,” as if the average wearer is taking it down past 600 feet.

200 bar is over a mile deep, don’t think any watch survives that!

In all seriousness, many still wear a dive watch, especially at resorts taking the boats out to the reefs. It is just a status symbol now and most don’t know how to even use them properly

Lol, my bad. I meant 20 and 30 bars.

I don't collect, but my dad gave me a watch my uncle got him right after WWII when he was stationed in Germany. The case is 18 ct gold. I have always wondered if it is worth anything. I don't remember the brand name but I do know the German company went bankrupt after the war.

That’s cool. Is it in decent condition?

Can you post a picture?

I love window shopping or net surfing for watches.

Never had the funds for a high end one but have a decent citizen that looks wore out now It was a little over $300 but that is a lot for me. Guitars I have paid a hell of a lot more.

I think every guy has wanted a Rolex Submariner at one point. Such a classic watch.

I really wanted this Seiko. Love the basic style of it but the dial with the texture and the manta rays swimming....just love this thing.
Did not have the funds for it and could not justify the money for it as we were trying to pay off some other things.

With that said. I found a cheaper chinese brand. It does not pretend to be a seiko. It has it's own brand name. But very similar to the Seiko but with sharks instead of Manta rays and much cheaper.

This Version Is much cheaper but still does the trick. The guts aka movement of the watch is actually from Seiko. It runs good, looks good but much cheaper. I wish it had the cyclops window and a better clasp but it will do.

That is a cool watch, seems like $995 is a heck of a steal.

Submariners are actually very common for Navy Seals and Marsoc

I got into watches about 10–15 years ago. Nothing super fancy.....mostly buying Citizen and Bulova watches. I ended up getting rid of most of them and now I’m down to just two Citizen watches left. One of them is really nice, while the other is pretty worn down and beat up.

Funny as it may be, my smartwatch kind of ruined traditional watches for me. I ended up getting one free with my Samsung phone years ago when they first started hitting the market. I never really paid much attention to them, but once I got one, I loved it. I could check the time, read texts and emails, change watch faces, etc. It pretty much took over as my everyday watch. Fancy? Definitely not, but damn is it useful.

Ironically, I think the advent of the Apple Watch (and Android variants) have increased the appeal of mechanical watches.

There’s a real renaissance in the watch industry right now. Microbrands (or small independent brands) are very prominent right now. I liken it to the craft beer craze that evolved the beer industry.

I love electronic gear.
Have had Iphones and Samsungs. Tablets. Lap tops. Desk tops. Ipod, a short lived CD player that could play mp3s on cds so you could have gigs of music. Various versions of fit bits. Garmin dash cams.

However the one thing I have never desired has been a smart watch. Do not know why. Guess I just prefer the old fashioned watch for their looks and various designs. The smart watches have lots of nice GUI screens but most of the shapes and bands look generic.

I didn't realize until I got more into the hobby how well-respected the Seiko brand is amongst collectors. They are so ubiquitous that you can fall into thinking they are just run-of-the-mill. Seiko movements are really popular with microbrands, given how durable, reliable, and easy to repair they are. The following Seiko SSK-001 was the first real watch I ever purchased and is, in fact, still my daily. You can get it for about $375-450 nowadays; I still think it punches above its weight.

Very Nice.
I agree...Seiko does a wide range of different watches including some high end with the grand seikos.
