Living in San Antonio..

the San Antonio Commanders have Moose as their GM.

What a nice job he is doing here so far.

Here he addresses a payroll snafu for the players to the media.

We all love this guy as a Cowboy and football commentator.

Is it foreseeable at all that the Jones would look at Darrel as a good hire for the team?

Not in a GM role now..but maybe DTR when Jerry steps down?

Aikman has expressed a desire to eventually be an executive of a team in the future.

Maybe it's Dallas?

Aikman in charge of player personnel and Moose at GM has a nice ring to it.

And Romo can be HC.

Just daydreaming and it's off-season.

But replies are welcome.

Proceed.

I haven't seen a shred of evidence that Aikman is remotely qualified to run player personnel. He can't even stay consistent on his views on Dak. Remember, he wanted LaFleur over Tony Gonzalez. He wanted Eric Bjornson. How did those work out?

He did NOT want LaFleur over Gonzalez. This is a tired old untruth.

That said, I want no part of giving him a GM job. I agree with you there.

Why don't we listen to Aikman's own words on it, shall we?

“I thought David was the more complete player as far as what he could do blocking,” said former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, who had a pre-draft workout with LaFleur and Tony Gonzalez. “David was pegged as the right guy for us. He had some injuries and football as it ended up wasn’t something that was a real priority in his life.”

That's a direct quote from Aikman. Tired old untruth indeed.

Hmm. Well damn. Maybe I'm wrong here.

What did he say about Gonzalez?
Did he say something all the lines of Gonzalez being outstanding in the passing game but
will need to work on his blocking? Because he would've been correct there.

I don't think Aikman had any real say at all. Now, what he should've
said was "trade up and get Gonzalez".

LaFleur was never going to be in Gonzalez's league but he wasn't terrible until the back injury.

I like the name "Death Monkey". Very metal.

This is from a 2013 article.

The Cowboys did eventually move up, from 25 to 22, where they took LSU tight end David LaFleur. Aikman had also thrown to LaFleur before the draft, and he’d been impressed. Figuring Gonzalez would likely be off the board when the Cowboys picked, Aikman told the Cowboys brass he was onboard with LaFleur. But when it came time for Jones to explain the pick, his take was a bit different. “Jerry stands up and says, ‘Troy wanted David LaFleur,'” Aikman says. “So everyone here in Dallas thinks I picked David LaFleur over Tony Gonzalez. That couldn’t be further from the truth. They never asked me, ‘Which one do you want?'”

“And then Tony went on to do what he did."

Gonzalez was drafted 13th overall. He was long gone.

Head coach, sign him up. 100%. He would be worlds better than the happless clapping Howdy Duty.

Thanks! :) It's an old gaming name I used to use.

I can't find anything right now on what Aikman thought of Gonzalez at the time of the private workouts... only something Aikman said way after the fact.... The thing about that is, watching him say things about players now, he edits his history about what he believes regularly, so I have trouble doubting anything he says so far after the fact.

He said that he knew Gonzalez would have a good career. This was many years later. More than likely, he liked both players but thought LaFleur would be better overall and have a better career.

Still, everyone whiffs on draft choices from time to time. But Aikman hasn't shown that he has any real skill with player personnel and so why should the Cowboys take a gamble on him? It's better to go with a Scout who's career was based around personnel selection. Aikman was a great QB. He was a great field general. He's an okay announcer. Let him stick with that.

But again, that's probably just Aikman editing things as he does with Dak.

The source that I pulled from was from before 2013....So suddenly Aikman, who said one thing before, changes his story in 2013? Come on. :)

Hasn’t worked out too well in Denver
Being a great player means nothing when it comes to picking players or coaching
The best GM’s seem to have came up through scouting

IIRC, Troy needed someone who could help block, more than he needed a great receiver at that point. Maybe that skewed his opinion a bit.

Elway Redux

Daryl Johnston retired as a player @20yrs ago.

If he had any desire to be an NFL coach/exec he would one by now.

The FFA gig is likely a job where he doesn’t have to show up everyday, doesn’t have to travel and gets paid mostly for his name-value.
Nice job to have.

It's never to late to take on a new challenge.

I commend him.
