Since I live in Germany, I have been a soccer fan before I found out about the football thing in the US.
And I do enjoy watching a soccer match once in a while live in stadium. It's a much different atmosphere compared to football games.
My favourite soccer club is FC Schalke 04. They play in the first German soccer division. The have a long tradition and were founded in 1904 and have won multiple championships in the early years. It's mainly a club supported by the coal mine workers. It's somewhat of a religion in the city. The last pope was also a member of the club.
The have been close twice to winning the championship in the last few years, but faded at the end of the season to finish second.
They are also called "Champions of Heart", because the lost one championship in heartbreaking fashion. In the last game of the season they needed a win or they had to depend on the outcome of a parallel game with Bayern Munich. Schalke played remis. The game was over for Schalke, and Bayern also had to play remis. The fans of Schalke were already celebrating the first championship for 50 years, when Bayern shot the winning goal 5 minutes in surplus time. Bayern Munich took the championship.
