Anybody watching Rivers in the pocket?

Tom Landry wanted Roger Staubach to be more of a pocket passer but that simply wasn't Roger's strength. It worked a lot better for us for him to scramble and make plays on the move and the same is true for Romo.

Rivers is an outstanding QB and doesn't get the credit he deserves because everyone bought into Mel Kiper's assertion that he would never make a good QB in the NFL because of his throwing motion. Well Rivers has proven him, and everyone who believed him, wrong. IMO, Rivers is a better QB than Drew Brees. I know no one will agree with me on that but that is what I believe. I rank him in the top-5 along with Manning, Romo, Brady, & Brees (not in that order though).

Rivers is a prototypical pocket passer, like Peyton Manning & Tom Brady, but Romo is not. Trying to make Romo more like them will not work. He is best making plays on the move and he proved that against New Orleans. I think Rivers is a better QB than Romo but would probably not be as successful in our system or behind our O-Line as Romo is.

I lobbied for a trade for Rivers when San Diego was trying to decide which QB to keep, him or Brees, because I saw him play here locally at NC State and really liked what I saw from him.

For all those who believe that only December games matter, the guy is UNDEFEATED in December! 18-0 now as a starter I believe for his career. He has also led the Chargers to wins over the Colts in the playoffs both of the last two years. He is a leader and a winner and if I had to trade Romo for anyone he would be the only guy I'd take.

Rivers burned our defense repeatedly by stepping up in the pocket and beating the rush by a split second. Happened too many times to count. He isn't a very mobile QB, but he knows when to step up in the pocket.

Ding ding ding.

Romo makes our line look much better than it is. A guy like Rivers, with his lack of mobility and one dimensional style of play would be exposed behind a line like ours. Ditto for Eli Manning.

Its tough to argue against his December record, but very rarely do you ever see Rivers do anything special outside of step up in the pocket and deliver the football. He has great protection, a great running game, one of the best TEs in the game, and 2 big receivers that go up and make plays.

Not saying he isn't a good QB, but he is a product of the system. Put him behind our inconsistent bunch and you'll really see his whiney arse start to cry.

I'm fine with Romo on our team. That being said. Outside of that Manning guy in Indy and Brees in NOLA, there may not be a better QB in the league this year than Rivers.

Romo >>>Rivers

I don't care what Rivers does. Put Rivers behind our OL and he's Tim Couch all over again - maybe Ryan Leaf. Tony covers up our hideous OL regardless of how much the media praises our OL.

A couple of points to make here.

Our interior OL often allows alot of penetration preventing Romo from stepping forward.

Rivers is 6'6" and Romo is only 6'1.5". Romo's vision will be affected much more than Rivers by stepping forward.

Rivers was able to step forward so much against us because the DTs were not being disciplined in their pass rush and were creating large holes for Rivers to walk through. When a QB is out in the open like that and can set his feet to throw, any defense is going to be toast. They will complete over 80% of their passes like that. That was just a mistake we were making in that game.

Rivers' accuracy in the mid-range game right now is reminiscent of Troy Aikman - he has been on fire.

he's not that accurate at all. didn't some random kid at a camp dominate him in an accuracy challenge?

After the 2007 season Romo decided he wanted to emulate Tom Brady. He liked how Brady stood in the pocket and how smoth he was while in the pocket.I think after he did that he hurt himself more than he helped himslef because he changed his style of play.Romo needs to be Romo,he can't try to emulate other players or he will screw himslef up again.

Craig

This gets repeated all the time, but it isn't accurate. Romo said in an interview that he noticed that Brady didn't inch forward when he patted the ball or on pump fakes and that he (Romo) tried to emulate that part of Brady's game. That's all. It didn't have anything to do with pocket presence.

We got hurt last year by mediocre interior line protection, a string of top-5 defenses and a variety of injuries to key players. Penalties, turnovers, and mental errors...that's all.

And the people boasting about using the ignore list. Again it's pretty sad that most of you are over 35 years old. The immaturity of some people on here is amazing to me.

I brought this up last week and got crucified, so I will try and do a better job this time. I think Tony is a very good QB with lots of athletic ability. What I would like him to learn to do better is step into the pocket and throw the ball more. If you watch Rivers, and I understand it may be that the SD OL is that much better than we are, but Rivers will drop back, let the rushers come, step forward into the pocket and throw, and most importantly, he rarely rushes a throw.

Tony seems to rush the throw way too many times and rarely steps into the pocket like Rivers does.

Again, I realize that maybe SD's OL just does a much better job than our OL, but if you are watching the game tonight you will understand what I am saying.

It looks like, and this may be the answer, that Rivers trusts his OL alot more than Tony.

If our OL could block like the Chargers are doing tonight and Tony learned to just relax and step up into pocket, we would score 40 points a game, I really believe this. I don't know if this is a matter of coaching or what, it is just very obvious watching tonight's game.

OK, I am done, go ahead and roast me and tell me I don't know football!
charger fan here, but one thing i've always liked about romo is his ability to sidestep pressure

at times he just looks masterful in avoiding a heavy pass rush, i don't know about the whole stepping up in the pocket deal for him, but his lateral movements in the pocket have always seemed superb to me

people act like sd's oline is great lol, it's not , it's just that rivers has adjusted his release and gets rid of the ball ALOT faster than he used to

he's not going to hold it forever like big ben and aaron rodgers do

rivers definitely is hated by most non chargers fans

they lack the ability to realize he's a great qb

they make excuses all day as to why he's so successful...when the fact is, he's just great

that doesn't take anything away from romo, romo's put up some pretty damn good numbers too.

my favorite stat is rivers is 18-0 in december alone and cutler's 22-29 in his entire career

another great stat is, rivers is the highest scoring on avg, qb , in the history of the nfl....

For their careers Romo & Rivers are very close statistically but in a game-by-game comparison, Romo has the bigger numbers. Rivers has started 10 more games than Romo (63-53) but has only one more TD pass and 404 more yards for their careers. Rivers has thrown 8 fewer INTs than Tony but his YPA & TD% are lower than Romo's.

After last night's game, Rivers moved slightly ahead of Romo in career passer rating 95.8 - 95.6. That puts them officially 2nd & 3rd all-time behind Steve Young (96.8) and just ahead of Peyton Manning (95.3). (Aaron Rodgers is "unofficially 2nd at 96.6. His is unofficial because he has not thrown at least 1500 passes in his career to qualify.)

I know the media will always want to compare Rivers with Eli (there is no comparison, Rivers is FAR better than Eli will ever be) or with Brees, but I think Romo is a much better comparison for him. They have gone back and forth on my rating chart all season, neck and neck all year. If Romo has a big game tomorrow night then he could move ahead of Rivers again.

Rivers is better than Romo. However, saying that pocket presense is where Romo lacks is inane.

Rivers has steadily improved himself. I do not consider him better then Brees- they are very different QBs each extremely successful. Romo is more like Brees in that he moves more then Rivers who is not a mobile QB. Rivers is like Peyton in that he is also not mobile but moves JUST enough.

Our O line is not as consistent and that is one reason we needed a guy like Romo- remember Bledsoe? He was not as bad as some said but he just could not move much and took a lot of sacks. Romo is the ideal QB for the O line that we have right now.

I think everyone ended up just where they needed to be: Romo, Brady, Peyton, Brees, Rivers. Even McFlabb.
