Gil Brandt From Cowboys Camp
I was listening to Gil Brandt talk briefly about his time at Dallas' camp tonight on Sirius NFL Channel and he had a lot of good things to say that I thought were very interesting. I turned it on about halfway through his comments, so I missed some of what he said.
When he was asked which rookies stood out to him, he said there were 3 guys that impressed him. The first was Victor Butler (said he was schooling just about everybody he went up against in pass-rush drills). The second was Brandon Williams (said he wasn't quite as good as Butler, but thought he had a lot of potential). And the last one was DeAngelo Smith (said he looked the most NFL-ready of all the rookies, and said that while he was playing Safety, and played Safety in college, he had the coverage skills of a CB).
He also mentioned how impressed he was with the fact that so many of the players reported to camp BELOW the weight they were instructed to make. He singled out Spears (who he said was noticeably quicker and more disruptive after having lost 27 pounds), and Roy Williams (he said the team told him to lose 10 pounds in the offseason and he lost 16 and looked great).
He also said he thought Kitna was a great pickup, and said that if he'd been on the team last year, Dallas would have likely won 2 more games than they did and ended up in the playoffs.
