Anyone else happy they didn't enforce hip-drop tackle as penalty?

I for one am glad, they chose not to do it. I cant imagine seeing 60 flags a game. Since its such ambiguous form of tackling.

Dont think the defensive player plans it out. Is happens spontaneously, in milliseconds. Your job is to bring defender down. Long
as you dont involve the facemask.

I understand the tackle on Pollard was hip-drop tackle. I was so bummed and angry about it. Took Dallas momentum out of the game.
Nonetheless, I saw SF tackler just doing what he could to bring TP down. TP fighting further might of worsen the situation leading to hip tackle. Not sure, though.

You guys feel the same?

Today, one is forced to just physically halt a ball carrier through collision...or use technique of some nature. That kind is often spontaneous and with physically disadvantaged defenders. Not easy there. The carrier has to be stopped there and then...or face his coach and then, teammates.

The Niners and Seahawks are notorious for tackling in this fashion. Multiple times they tried to tackle Pollard in this fashion. Re-watch the game and you'll notice it.
A team has to make an opponent pay for the kind of success they introduce...at all levels.

..exactly my point. Its spontaneous collision. You cant plan that out.

Football is always been a violent game. The rules of the rules. Each season I pray to the NFL gods that they grant us good health. Every team plays by the same rules, some are just luckier than others on the injury front. If you remove everything that causes an injury in football what you have left is Madden.

Would have fast forwarded the NFL to flag football status and doubt the current fool Commish could even be influenced enough to totally take away defensive tackling.
Let's take a look at how this current Commish has softened the game already, owners support it because they don't want to pay the lawsuits for concussions.
Players rights advocates started this rock rolling, lets not confuse ourselves.

 Who said 15-20 serious concussions for a quarterback is too many?

Anything that helps prevent injury is worth looking at. But that rule would be so hard to intelligently enforce. If a player intentionally does it to hurt someone that’s one thing, but if it’s the only way to tackle the guy that’s another. And expecting an official to know the difference is asking for the impossible

When it happens consecutively, it starts to be a problem. What people missed about the tackle on Pollard was that it happened multiple times. They were obviously trying to tackle him that way....
I agree but how do you write a rule that doesn’t eliminate the tackle all together, yet stop it being used as a trained technique?

It's already an inconsistent flag fest and they can't even keep up with enforcing the current rules. The best thing to do with part-time employees that can't keep up is give them more BS penalties to ref.

Any tackle is a potential injury. Heck, guys can get injured without any contact at all. There will never be a 100% safe sport. Even flag football will have serious injuries from time to time. I forget that Jags player from a couple of decades back that blew out both knees in a touch football game.

Watching replays of old games on NFL Network I see horse collar tackles all the time and most times the ball carriers does not get hurt. Yet they outlawed that. But if you notice the horse collar is not a problem is the tackler does not land on the ball carriers legs. It seems to me that landing on the back of the legs is the problem not tackling a guy by his pads from behind.

I think the problem with the hip drop tackle is policing it.

It's a crappy way to tackle and can end a season and career imho. We will see how well Pollard comes back from it.

Ever watch defenders trying to tackle the Nigerian Nightmare, Christian Okeye?

Getting Derrick Henry on the ground is a challenge for players his size. If you are a CB, how are you going to get him down if not using your body weight in a hip drop?

How did we stand the carnage of clothesline and horse collar tackles back in the day?

The refs and rules can go so far, it is incumbent on the ball carrier to protect himself as well. They seldom flag the second tackler coming in on a RB but Emmitt was able to get to the ground and avoid those blow up hits. He protected himself extremely well.

..yep CC, good points. I remember back in the day in HS football.

I'm 5'9, was 190 back then..lol. Anyhow, we had this big back who was 6'1 210, fast too. At times was told to play DB in scrimmage games. It was hell, bringing this guy down.
And yes, I had to rely on my leg weight to bring him down. Hip tackle for sure. I wasn't fast enough to grab him by the shoulders, wrap, then try to bring him down.

So when I see King Henry coming out with the ball in open space. I laugh, thinking who's going to be the first. ;)..

I remember watching, SEA game couple years ago. (Vs Dallas) I could swear seeing some defenders literally trying to hold up a ball carrier, letting another come in for more vicious tackle.
Which then, basically led to hip drop tackle. Carroll must run a bottom feeding environment over there.
