This may have already been discussed, but I couldn't find a thread about it, .. but was anyone else surprised when they gave Washington a time-out back?

Nobody tells you when to call a time-out, or if you can or can't or if you should or shouldn't call a time-out

I would think that once you called it, you called it.

When I first heard them talking about that, I laughed, and said you can't get a timeout back just because you shouldn't have called one in the first place.

But I was wrong and they gave them the time-out back.

What was the thinking on that?

I understand it was because we had a player hurt, but they called the time-out, .. it should be tough, you called it now live with it.

I thought it was stupid also.

I didn't think it was right but if we did the same thing I'd want it back to.

I believe they should have been SOL though and lost it (I expect the same if we did it).

It actually pissed me off, they wouldn't have had that last drive if they wouldn't have had that timeout. As we know it turned out ok, but it could have been very costly.

In all my years of watching football I don't recall having ever seen that happen. I didn't really know what to think. Is it in the rule book, does anyone know?

I'm sure that if Chris Weber knew you could do that, he would have chosen to do so in the NCAA championship game that year against UNC.

It's called the "Joe Gibbs is senile and in his last season coaching" exception to the rule.

You are right, it changed everything at the end. They may not have even gotten the ball back at all, or with only a few seconds left anyway.

Gibbs probably told the refs he was going to send in a hour long tape of missed calls if they didn't give it back to him......

My apologizes, I can understand how a Michigan fan remembers that differently than the rest of us.

But seriously, the refs yesterday would have let him take it back.

I have seen it before and seen both teams benefit from it in the past. Whether it was he team with the injured player or the team without the injured player, whichever to their timeout back because there is an official injury timeout. This one seemed weird because it took so long for the refs and FOX to even notice that Adams was hurt.

Remember waaaaaaay back when (I think Aikman was still QB) when we had some kiind of hand signal that kinda looked like the timeout hand signal and the refs called timeout when we didnt have one? I believe we were driving down close to the goal line at the end of a game and we ended up losing because they ran time off the clock. That was the most absurd timeout situation I can remember.

I remember that. It was against the Rams. There is more to the story.

Aikman had been using that hand signal throughout the game and especially on that last drive. Aikman at one point on that last drive tried to call time out. He signaled and yelled, but the refs were very slow at granting the time out. Maybe about 10 extra seconds were ticked off the clock because the refs were slow. Aikman got in the refs face and chewed him out, rightfully.

Dallas runs another play and then try to hurry up to the line while Aikman is making that other hand signal to his receivers. The ref steps in and says Aikman called time out. Troy again chews out the ref because it was a bunch of bull.

I remember watching the highlights of the game on ESPN and other channels and the first part was always left out. They just focused on how dumb it was that Dallas used a hand signal that was so close to a timeout. Dallas was not a good team back then, so it was easy for them to pile on and ignore what really happened. The ref screwed up by not giving the initial time out in a timely manner and then got shown up by Aikman. So he got revenge by stopping the clock when he knew a timeout had not been called.

That's cool, ... why is that?

My guess would be because time was out for an official's time out and you can't have 2 time outs at the same time.
