Parts of it are "recreations" and such...

But I find it interesting.

We've had many Amish move into our part of Western New York because farm prices are so low (as opposed to the Lancaster, PA area), and we see them around quite often.

That's part of the show's fascination for me.

I saw bits and pieces of one episode. It was actually really interesting. I saw the one where a major leader in the community was sneaking off to have sex with prostitutes.

The only parts that aren't "recreations" are the buggies going down the road, as long as "recreations" mean complete and utter fiction.

As someone who has multiple business dealing with Old Order Amish, Mennonite and a few Beachy Amish to the point where they've become more like friends, I can say without any reservation that the show is 90% fiction or more.

Levi the original Gangster.

I can't help but think of Weird Al yankovics Amish Paradise

Everytime I see a promo for this show or the other 2000 shows like it that now litter Discovery/History/any other formerly "learning" channel I want to weep for the state of America.

I know what you mean. Yesterday I was flipping through channels and the History Channel had "to be announced" on the channel guide. The program turned out to be WWII looking through a space perspective. It was a very good program as it covered the final days of the Europe and Pacific campaigns. This was the kind of programming I had looked for when these channels started appearing, but sadly it's a rare event anymore.

Now most of the channels (TLC, A&E, Discovery, etc.) are just trash reality shows.

I have watched three episodes. I gave up when one of the "enforcers" started pumping rounds through a guys car because he was rude at the door.

I think the whole thing must be BS.

From a NY Times Review:

An early credit warns of “select re-enactments,” and since we’re never later told whether we’re watching staged scenes, it’s fairly safe to assume that everything is staged. (A closing credit clarifies that “re-creations are based on eyewitness accounts, testimonials and the legend of the Amish Mafia.”)

Is there reality TV elsewhere and is it respectable?
I thought this drivel was an American phenomenon.
