Anyone feel like there's two different school of thought re: kind of character drafted on o and d

Feels like
On d we can take in anyone as long as they boost out athleticism and on o it seems like Garrett wants his guys versatile and with a much cleaner background.

I think that Garrett is working from a Beli model. You get a strong base of good citizens and leaders, then you have a structure in place that allows you to bring in the occasional guy with poor character. Enough leaders to keep others in line is important.

You need a little craziness on defense. You need to play with an attitude that's not required on offense to the same degree as you need on defense.

With Hardy, Gregory and Ro, this defense has all the mental instability it needs to succeed.

I think it reflects that fact that there is no one guy supplying the vision that everyone else follows. If the roster were solely up to Garrett, I believe we would draft only high character guys (even if we have to reach to do so).

But it is not. Jerry has his say. And I believe that is why we have guys on the roster with some significant baggage. I think it is pretty easy to tell at this point who are the guys Garrett wants to build with (e.g., Byron Jones) and who are the guys Jerry wants (e.g., Randy Gregory).

All of that said, I actually think this two prong approach is currently working. I don't think either approach would work by itself. But they do seem to compliment one another. Garrett stocks the roster with high character guys that allows the locker room to absorb the guys with baggage that Jerry insists be brought in.

On defense. I want my crazy to be more pronounced from front to back shifting to cerebral as you get to the back end.

You want slobbering monsters ready to destroy every moment their fingers touch the green grass below them with a madness and you want your linebackers and corners to have a mix of both ferocity and problem solving and you need even more brain work when you get to the safeties.

I mean- that's my simplistic thoughts on the subject. On Defense- I want some crazies.

Agreed and Dez definitely qualifies as a defensive mentality, Irvin exactly the same obviously.

I also believe that Red knows exactly what is needed on a Championship squad. He was on those Championship teams with Irvin, Haley, Big E, James Washington, Kevin Gogan etc. All those guys had some crazy blood pumping through their veins. Red was smart enough to realize that the Cowboys needed to become a more physical and punishing team via running the football...after all he was there in the middle of it. I think he realizes exactly what is needed to be successful as he has played and coached with some of the best, lets hope it all works out.

Dez, Randle, & La'El all play offense last time I checked.

I am not so sure Gregory won't prove to be a high character guy. He knows himself which is always important, and he got a 28 on the wonderlick (not entirely a character thing... but that goes to show he is quite smart, which has me wondering why he needed to go to JUCO). Anyone know anything about his background that might suggest why he was dumb enough to do drugs and why he needed to go to JUCO, because that is all that is interfering with his character from what I can see.
