About a month ago, I checked my mailbox and I had mistakenly been given a "Bicyclist" magazine. As luck would have it, it was the annual buyers guide that had just about every model you could think of in it.
I thumbed through the magazine, and for about two weeks I laughed and laughed, and laughed at these fools who would pay 4-6-8-10 grand for a fricken BICYCLE !!! The prices just shocked me silly. No motors....just pedals.
After a few weeks of this magazine lying around I decided one day to see what all the fuss was about and I brushed off the dust from my walmart special mountain bike that has about 1 mile on it since I bought it new back in 2001.
I rode around white rock lake (for you dallas people), which is about 9.5 miles. It took me over an hour because I wasn't sure exactly how tough it was going to be so I took my time.
I had a ball doing this, even though it was clear that the bike I was on was a total piece of you know what. I kept going back and back and back some more, until after about 100 miles on my walmart special bike, it just died on me. I have since bought a roadbike on craigslist for $400. Carbon forks, Carbon stays, damn thing was almost new even though it was 3 years old.
I love this riding thing. I am now riding around white rock in 37 minutes. I've been really watching what I'm eating and even trying to give up my marlboro's because of this health kick this bike has put me on. I've lost about 10 lbs so far and I'm feeling pretty good. I'm even thinking about training for a mini triathalon.
If I keep this up for a whole year, and still enjoy it as much as I do now, I'm going to break down and buy one of those high dollar bikes I was laughing at in that magazine just a month ago (ok, maybe not one of those crazy high dollar ones).
So i was wondering if anyone else considers themselves a cyclist. If so, how'd you get into it?
