Anyone know how Andre Holmes is as a player?

Jerry gets a pet cat every offseason. Last year it was Costa. I remember when he was bragging how great Robert Brewster looked in OTAs.

It would be great if Holmes becomes something. It would be stupid to depend on it.

The Cowboys thought enough of him that they called him up from the practice squad last year when some other team was going to sign him to a regular roster. He was inactive the entire time, iirc, but that shows at least some other team thought he was worth the regular salary.

Given his low level of college competition, he's just the kind of guy who needs practice squad time for development. Hope Holmes does well enough that the Cowboys have a hard time figuring out who to cut at WR.

I should have said 'should be embarrassing.'

Personally, I'd have gone with 'yeah, my bad.' And left it at that, but that's me.

I think you completely missed the point of the post. Go back down to the basement and watch TV :lmao2:

I ignored the point, because it was obvious your intention was to keep digging, when you should have just acknowledged that you didn't realize the player you hadn't seen anything from wasn't actually on the team during the preseason. By all means, if you think people are buying it, keep selling it.

Re: Holmes, I pay very little attention to anything Jerry says about these bottom roster guys. I do listen to Romo, though. He's pretty much a straight shooter when it comes to players he thinks can contribute. He's only hinted that we've got some developing players, but I take him at face-value:

“I think the potential is there for a couple of guys to go in and grab that spot,” Romo said in a press conference Tuesday at Valley Ranch, where the Cowboys are in their second week of voluntary workouts. “It’s just a matter of who is going to work their butt off and put themselves in that position. I think some guys have started that.”

That's really neither here nor there. We'll see what happens in camp. but it sounds to me like Tony thinks we at least have some guys with potential. The quote I like is this one, re: Robinson:

“He had a knack for continuing to move as the play broke down,” Romo said of Robinson, who signed with Jacksonville. “He understood the timing I wanted to see, and he was able to do that really well.”

Because this is primarily what I expect to see from Danny Coale. I know I've got a man-crush on this guy, and I know in all probability he'll be struggling just to compete at this level. At the same time, I can see him coming in from day one and offering, not an exceptional skill set, but great hands, great body control, and the ability to extend plays and understand the timing Romo expects to see.

Asked Thursday about his thoughts on the Cowboys' receivers behind Austin and Bryant, Garrett talked first about Ogletree.

"We feel like we have some young receivers that we like," Garrett said. "Kevin Ogletree has been with us for three years now and has really done a good job with the opportunities given him, has not had a lot of playing time, been behind some veteran players, but we like what he's doing with the limited chances he's got, so he's certainly in the mix. He's in the conversation."

If not for the fact that Norv personally picked up the phone and sold Garrett on Robinson, Ogletree would have been our #3 WR last year. It's his job to lose, unless one of the new guys absolutely blows the doors off the barn in preseason. He has seniority and Garrett keeps bringing him back. Garrett has inexplicable man-love for Ogletree, and he can't quit him.

The quote says he's in the mix/ in the conversation for WR3. That doesn't say 'inexplicable man love' to me. Though, I'll admit, my understanding of man-love is limited to an unsuccessful experiment one time in college.

It says he was the first name on his mind when it comes to who's going to be our #3 WR.

On the day when KO was visiting the Giants during FA. It's hard to tell from the context of that article what preceded the question. Either way, the guy's in the mix, or in the conversation. We'll see what that gets him. I predict it's a 2011 redux.

People really need to stop reffering to Holmes as a potential #3 receiver. The reality is that the "3" receiver will be Coale or Harris or a player not yet here. The #3 receiver is the man who comes in and plays the slot, and while Miles does play the slot at times he and Dez line up predominantly on the outside. Holmes, if he's legit, will be a backup outside receiver and in four-wide sets will come in with Miles and Coale/Harris in the slot.

Unless he is another Miles Austin (nobody to star overnight), he'll see far fewer snaps than our true #3 regardless of whether he's better or not. He's not an inside receiver.

I cant wait to see this guy! I have heard this guy makes a ton of plays in practice. I was told he may not be as good as Laurent, but he is a more than capable 3rd wr.

I just heard Stephen Jones asked about #3 WR 15 minutes ago, and Kevin Ogletree was the the first name he brought up. He certainly made it pretty clear that they think he can be Robinson.

OK, I won't... but you're gonna have to learn how to live with just one arm...

My point was not that he wasn't on the team. I actually was aware of his status. my point was the total lack of any substantive information of the guy's playing history (he played somewhere right?? pee-wee, high school, maybe collge??), ability, etc. In your haste to look clever by making snide comments that weren't relevevant to the thread (largely personal in nature), you completely glossed over the issue. Nice day my friend.

Yesterday in Stephen Jones' Talking Cowboys Interview he mentioned that Defensive players raved about Andre and that Tony Romo trusts him. Speaks volumes to me.

Jerry Jones said he was impressed by Holmes, I don't know a ton about him beside he looks great on paper, 6'5 210lbs runs a 4.5 40..... anyone know how he is as a player? is he a reliable receiver? is he an efficient route runner? willing to catch balls over the middle? does anyone know these things?

This is what Stephen Jones had to say about him:

"Andre Holmes is a guy we’re looking forward to seeing. We almost activated him last year. The first unit CBs raved about him all year last year in practice."

Well it shouldn't just be assumed that the 3rd WR coming in has to be a slot guy since Austin can also play the slot.

To me, its about getting the most talented player on the field, whether he fits a 'profile' of a slot WR or not. The only reason why I would treat the situation like this is cause of the skills that Austin possesses to be able to play both positions....and the reason why Austin gets the big bucks when heathy.

On this team, with Austin, Holmes could be our #3 WR just as easy as Coale or Harris.

I don't believe you. But I'll humor you. If you google 'andre holmes video' you'll find clips of his combine workout and a very nice video ********* put up that shows both his combine stats relative to his draft class and some great highlight footage of his work when he was at Hillsdale College (I'd link it directly, but there is foul language in the background music). Nothing from pee-wee football, though. You can use Google this way, too, for other players. Just type their name, and then the word 'video,' and if there's anything out there to see, Google will try to find it for you.

And I did not attack you personally. I criticized one specific point you made directly to the topic of the thread.

As for the Holmes college video, he's playing against boys, but he looks really good. Finishes plays, beats double coverage. Goes up and gets the ball. Long strider, but displays nice YAC. You can see why Romo likes this guy.
