Does anyone know if Rob Ryan has coached the 4-3 before? Dallas seems to have much better personnel for the 4-3.

Safeties: Sensabaugh, Griffin (FA)
CB's: Jenkins, Scandrick, draft pick
LB's Carter, Lee, draft pick or FA
DL: Ware, Ratliff, Brent/Lissemore, Spencer

He did with Oakland.

They already run multiple fronts. The 3-4 has been pretty good on 1st and 2nd down. It’s when they go to nickle on 3rd down that the Cowboys struggle. Cowboys need secondary improvements. They need better players and coaches to fix the back end.

We used it this year a few times. Most teams employ both schemes at different situations.

Gotcha. Did we use it in pass rushing/3rd down situations or as our base?

Is he interviewing for any HC vacancies ???

We have enough holes to fill, trying to switch to the 4-3 would only create more problems. It took us years to make the switch, and switching back just isn't that easy.

I disagree.

While the arguments for transitioning to a 4-3 alignment aren't particularly compelling, the arguments for staying with our current 3-4 aren't particularly compelling either.

On this defense, there are only three players who rank between very good and elite: Sean Lee, Jay Ratliff, and Demarcus Ware. Everyone else, outside of perhaps Mike Jenkin, is a marginal talent at best, the proverbial JAG. And they're going to be marginal regardless of which alignment they're in.

I certainly understand the trepidation in moving to a 4-3; Ware has earned his reputation as one of the best defensive players in league playing as an outside linebacker in a 3-4. However, Ware is talented enough to thrive in any almost any scheme in which he rushes the passer.

Furthermore, in my opinion, Jay Ratliff is actually better suited to be a defensive tackle in a four man front. And Sean Lee would excel as a middle linebacker in a 4-3 scheme, especially one that played copious amounts of cover 2.

Switching back won't be easy. But staying with it won't be easy either. The Cowboys simply lack talent, especially on defense.

After watching this years defense, the question should probably be "Has Rob ever coached a 3-4"? Our defense is laughable...they need to get rid of most of these guys and start over....

I would hope that there is at least a 40% overturn on the defensive side of the ball going into next year.

Great points all around.

Excellent points all around! But I think what it comes down to is we just need more talent!

Well I wish we would stop blaming the scheme, coaches, GM, or the Easter bunny for our issues and start looking directly at the players who have disgraced themselves in a Cowboy uniform.

Let's run the 4-3 flex. On wait that would take smart players & we don't have any.

OMG, another 4-3 thread.

It doesn't matter what scheme you run if you can't tackle or cover.

Didn't he run the 4-3 at Oakland? I don't remember much about those Raiders teams since they weren't any good but I don't remember them running the 3-4 since only a handful of teams were on the 3-4 bandwagon at the time
