Wasn't spears told if he reported over weight he could be fined by the team? In the report last night he said he was over the limit that BP told him to be at so does this mean he could be fined if so what kinda fine $$$ is he looking at?

The dude hasn't signed yet, so technically hes not a cowboy and cant be late, can he. I dunno, haven't heard anything on the subject, just my initial thoughts were wow, he signed, then I started thinking about it.

He had already dropped the weight by the time the second minicamp rolled around. Or at least he'd dropped most of it. I'd be surprised if he's over the limit at this point.

No one said anything about being late if anything he's early. I was talking about weight

Fourth rounders agree to contract terms

Canty, Barber in fold; team still working on Ware, Spears, Burnett

09:26 PM CDT on Thursday, July 28, 2005

By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News

OXNARD, Calif. – The Cowboys agreed to terms with their two fourth-round picks Thursday, but vice president Stephen Jones still has a lot of work to do before the team's first practice in two days.

Running back Marion Barber III and defensive end Chris Canty each received five-year contracts that pay them minimum salaries and void to three years, if they achieve certain playing time incentives.

Terms were not released.

But Jones, who handles the club's negotiations, still needs to get first-round picks Demarcus Ware and Marcus Spears and second-round pick Kevin Burnett signed.

Spears was the only member of the unsigned trio to accompany his teammates to California. Burnett lives in Los Angeles, an hour south of Oxnard, and Ware is in Atlanta.

"We're still talking and hopefully we'll get it done soon," Spears said. "I want to be here, so I'm ready as soon as we get it done. I'm a little nervous about the start of training camp, but that's to be expected."

Spears is also nervous about what coach Bill Parcells is going to say when he finds out that Spears isn't at his assigned weight of 294 pounds. Spears declined to say how much over his target weight he is, but admitted he felt weak and sluggish at that weight.

He hopes to convince Parcells to let him play at 300 or 305.

"I'm going to talk to him about it," Spears said. "I've never had a problem with conditioning, but I know he wants me a little lower than I am right now."

Spears said he thinks the extra weight will help him play defensive end in the Cowboys' scheme, which will require him to go head up on tackles who will generally outweigh him by 25-30 pounds. At LSU, he played defensive tackle and was usually aligned on the guard's outside shoulder so he could use his quickness.

Owner Jerry Jones said he isn't worried about whether his three unsigned players will be on the field for the first day of practice.

"I'm not any more concerned than I usually am," he said. "I know how the negotiations are going. I expect them all in by Saturday."

The Cowboys have not had a draft pick miss a portion of training camp since Flozell Adams, a second-round pick, missed the first two days in 1998.

It's interesting that he has actually put weight back on since the second minicamp. The fact that he lost it and said he felt sluggish and weak at that weight gives credence to his argument. If he hadn't lost it at all it might be argued that he was simply being lazy, but that's clearly not the case here.

On the other hand, a guy his size can lose 10-15 pounds in water weight. Couple hours in a sauna would do it. So maybe he didnt really lose the weight originally?

For the kid's sake, I hope that's NOT the case.

If he was simply unable to make the projected weight, maybe Tuna will go easy on him.

If he did make it, then deliberately regained it WITHOUT talking with Bill or Jurasyk about feeling tired/weak, and didn't get their permission....

he's dogmeat. ;)

Like every other player, his body is no longer his own.

He had the same trouble at LSU. He could not step away from the buffet. He does not play as well at 305 as he does at 295.

Add the fact that he decided to add the weight and then try to talk to Parcells about it sounds strange. He should have told them that up front. My guess is he gained the weight and then made up the story to try and cover himself. Parcells will not buy it.

If I remember correctly the fine is mid 90s dollars per day per pound. So ten pounds over would be almost a thousand dollars per day.

I also think that the this is a maximun fine as defined by the collective bargaining agreement.

He was asked to play with more speed at LSU. With the cowboys he'll be more responsible with managing opposing Tackles and Guards while collapsing the pocket and blocking running lanes. None of this requires as much speed as strength. I for one have no problem with him playing at a greater strength to speed ratio assuming our doctors deem that not to be an unacceptable injury risk.

Of course other players, like Jackson in Greenbay, have played quite well with some extra "mass" on the line. This just gives them more leverage and makes them more difficult to move out of the run lanes. However I doubt Spears will be putting on that kind of weight.

Grady Jackson has already been cut a couple times because the extra weight he carries around tires him out by the 3rd quarter.

That operation was very minor. Just cleaning out some debris. No biggy.

Marcus isn't a liar... if he had trouble keeping the weight, he would have just said so.

That being said, I think I would wait until he weighs in before you judge him. If he's one or two pounds over, IMO, that's not a big deal. Body weight fluctuates that much during the day. If we're talking up near 305, that would be a problem.

And the defense absolutely could not stop the run while he was injured in the middle of the season last year. They were good before... and the game he came back they were good again...

Seriously, he was one of the most underated players last year even when he was just 100% for 3 quarters. That's 3 more quarters of good defense then they had when he's not playing.

Ultimately I'd like to see us rotate on the line anyway. I want to see 2 Big NTs, and at least 3 big DEs along with one or two pass rush specialist at DE. Of course a lot of teams would love that kind of depth.
