I believe that the injury was in the 1972 preseason. Remember Roger was battling Craig Morton until the middle of the 1971 season to win the starting job and to take us to our first Super Bowl win.

Wiki says he missed most of '72 with a separated shoulder.

As I recall, Roger lowered his head and tried to blast this LB for some extra yardage close to the endzone. Wound up in the hospital instead.

He learned to duck after that. Rodger the Dodger became Duck Dodger if you will.

During a preseason game (in Los Angeles), Staubach made a knothead decision. Instead of scrambling out of bounds, he challenged linebacker Marlin McKeever. The collision dislocated his right shoulder and kept him inactive during the regular season except for token passes in December.​

He definitly learned something after that. He talked about how Landry ignored him for the last part of the year and later told him that he knew Staubach had to learn to not try and run over people if he wanted to be a QB.
