Anyone remember who seperated Roger Staubach shoulder in preseasn 1971

He had a run in with Diron Talbert of the Commanders also but I don't remember the exact details only that Roger was pissed about a hit by Talbert

Anyone know if he really dislocated his shoulder, and if so if it was his throwing arm. That would be a devastating injury to come back from as a QB as the natural throwing motion puts your arm in a good position to dislocate again - out away from your body and rotated outwards. It is actually one of the tests we use to detect instability of the shoulder following dislocations.

It has been such a long time, but I seem to remember that the Dallas Morning News ran a photo of Staubach not long after the injury.

I remember the black and white photo of Staubach reclining, perhaps in a hospital bed, with some sort of wrapping around his shoulder with his arm in a sling. I wonder if anyone here has access to this photo.

Wait ... now that I think of it a little more, it probably was a photo of Craig Morton (not Staubach). Morton had shoulder surgery - on his throwing shoulder - just a year or two before Staubach's preseason shoulder separation....

I guess that's one of the things I'm wondering about. In principle, I would think the chances of returning to high level throwing would be better with a separation - especially if it is a low grade serpatation.

During a preseason game (in Los Angeles), Staubach made a knothead decision. Instead of scrambling out of bounds, he challenged linebacker Marlin McKeever. The collision dislocated his right shoulder and kept him inactive during the regular season except for token passes in December.

I know what Adam quoted, but often newspapers get medical details incorrect because they don't know the difference. I was wondering if anyone actually knew for sure what the nature of the injury was because it has been said to be a separated shoulder and a dislocated shoulder. It is just a point of curiousity to me.

Dislocated shoulders would be disastrous for a QB. They frequently would lead to instability and a strong tendency to re-dislocate - especially for a throwing athlete in a contact sport. The second aspect of shoulder dislocations is they are often associated with rotator cuff tears, nerve injuries and labrum injuries. This injury occurred at an age where surgical repair of such injuries and the underlying chronic instability would not have been very good.
