Anyone remember who wore 12 after Staubach?

I found this on Wiki Answers:

Only three men have worn #12 for the Cowboys:
John Roach (QB 1964)
Ron Widby (P 68-71) also wore #10
Roger Staubach (QB 1969-79)
No one has worn #12 since Roger retired
That's not quite 100 percent true. It would be true to say no one has worn #12 in the regular season since Staubach. I remember they actually gave #12 to some pre-season long shot who didn't end up making the team. It must have been in the early 80s. I remember feeling horrified that they gave away Roger's number so soon. What I didn't understand as a kid at the time was they probably gave him that number because they were nearly certain he wasn't going to end up on the team, and if he somehow had, they probably would have changed it.

Does anyone remember the name of the flunky who briefly wore Roger's old number?

I don't believe anyone has. Not saying it si impossible, but I don't remember a prospect ever having that number.

To be honest after Felix is gone 28 should no longer be worn but Im bias due to our poor safety play every year since Woody left his legend has grown

your '89 team pic isn't showing up

Numbers 12 & 74 have not been worn in the regular season by anyone since Staubach and Lilly retired.

In training camp and pre-season there are times when those numbers are needed (74 in particular) and are given out but the players wearing them know that they will NOT be permanent.

You can add Aikman's #8 and Emmitt's #22 to that mix as well. You'll likely see #22 in the pre-season for the same reason as #74 but not on the final roster.

Does anyone wonder why Irvin's 88 never got the same treatment? The Triplets are all held in such high esteem and some believe Irvin was the catalyst for it all, but strangely his number has been quickly given to high round receivers since he left. It's more a tribute to the greatness of 88 in Cowboys lore than it is a tribute to Irvin or even Pearson.

I kind of like the fact that Irvin's number is still in circulation. An argument could be made that the number should have been retired after Drew Pearson hung it up. 88 has become synonymous with two great Cowboys WRs. Hopefully, it's current bearer can add his own legacy.

i think 33 should be added but it was worn for a season by Nate Jones just ridiculous should never be worn

Didn't Patrick Crayton wear it for a while as a rookie in training camp?

I guess because in preseason the team has 90 players and only so many numbers to go around.

Good observation, and you ask a very good question. Perhaps when the Cowboys draft a running back or quarterback thought to be the equal of Emmitt or Troy, the numbers will be used.

While Romo may be the best quarterback on the team since Aikman, he was an undrafted free agent when he signed on. No expectations that he would be the quarterback that he is.

Even though Felix was a #1 pick in 2010, he wasn't the No. 1 back on his college team. His pro career to say the least, has been disappointing. Murray's third round selection didn't merit wearing #22.

Anyone care, should be a better question.

It's not. But it should be.

If you retire every number that a great Cowboy wore then you would severely limit the amount of jersey numbers you could use.
There is only one number I would allow to be retired and that is #12.

I think its because they didnt do it after pearson, then irvin was awesome too. They cant do it now just because of irvin, so its kinda turned into passing it on to players who may be able to be the next great one

Because Irvin and Jerry are buddys and Jery wants another WR buddy

12 and 74 r the only two numbers basically retired. I would stop there.

Bet you never saw Bob Lilly play, did you? #74 is every bit as important as #12
