that Garrett wanted Bollinger as his backup because he's smart enough to learn the playbook, to be ready to play this season, to be the starter instead of Brad Johnson should Romo go down?

I don't know if I believe that, but it's an interesting thought, maybe anyone else is getting that vibe? Garrett was just saying the other day that he really liked how smart Bollinger was, and pointed out how quickly he was already learning the playbook

the thing is, Bollinger is playing on only a 1-year contract

you're probably right though, it's just a thought, seeing if anyone else is feeling it

Hopefully we draft a QB next year in the 3rd/4th Round who we can develop.

I think he was brought in to be Johnson's replacement. The only reason Johnson is still here is because he is the only QB other than Romo that knows the playbook, and the only reason Bollinger is listed as the #3 QB is because he doesn't know the playbook.

I don't think the team truly believes that Johnson is capable of carrying this team should Romo go down, but I do think they have confidence that Bollinger can at least drive the bus once he learns the playbook.

In regards to his 1 year contract, I'm not sure Dallas was willing to put a long-term commitment into him until he proves himself. Johnson will remain on the roster until he does, but I also expect Johnson to retire after this season.

We will probably still draft someone else in the offseason to groom.

I think the Boyz are just looking for someone younger to back up Romo for as long as he's able to play without injury. Brad can do it, but, he's turning 63 next year so they need someone to groom as Romo's backup. If not Bollinger next season, they will look again because Romo is here to star for quite awhile...

I think thats to early to go QB. One year contract see how he picks up the play book and then next year resign its not as if other teams are beating his door down

I hope that Jerry is changing his philosophy about carrying extra QBs. With a team like the Cowboys they should get the chance to showcase someone like Bollinger and if he's good enough then you'll get some extra picks.

Otherwise I'd rather just keep two. This year I suspect they want to migrate to another backup next year who can play more like Tony and keep the basic offense intact. Johnson needs another set of base plays than Romo. And he may be making noise about retiring and/or becoming a coach. He's supposedly a good teacher.

Hell let him retire then bring him in as the QB coach or something.

Bollinger is not ready and likely won't this year. Johnson could even play next year to make absolutely sure Bollinger is ready and the right guy. Being 'the backup' makes him not trade bait though.

No it's not.

Instead of drafting an OL who can't get on the field, we should draft a nice 3rd-4th round QB prospect who we can groom to be our eventual backup.

We have enough depth, that we can afford to pick up a QB in the 3rd or 4th Round if it's a good value.

I've read the same comment by Garrett about Bollinger being smart and a quick learner. What I'm wondering about is how is his arm? I really don't know much about him and was curious if anyone knew what kind of arm strengh he has, etc.?

Garrett said he has a "live arm"

I'd say it's average to above-average, he can put zip on it, but you won't see perfect, 50-yard throws often

He's a Garrett protege. I'll bet you some $$ that he's a coordinator in the making. He's cerebral enough to understand the game and has ok physical ability. You'll see him somewhere someday coaching in this league..

"anyone thinking what I'm thinking?"

I think so, Brain, but how are we going to get that elephant in here?

Garrett said he had a strong and live arm. He'll need to work on his release and footwork but then most do.

Beat me to it, but I was thinking more along the lines of "If Jimmy cracks corn, and nobody cares, why does he keep doing it?"

I loved that show. :laugh2:
