The only thing that really bothered me about the game is that Parcells still loves to call screen passes. They don't work. They are very annoying.

For a first pre-season game it went about as well as I expected. The team struggled to execute a very simple and plain game plan. They obviously didn't scheme for Arizona's offense or defense, which is pretty typical of a pre-season game. Especially for Parcells.

It is hard to get too excited or too down after 1 pre-season game especially since for the last several years they have all looked like this one did. The 2nd and 3rd pre-season games are the ones that have always jumped out at me as the ones that mattered the most. The starters usually don't play that much in the 4th pre-season game, so it never seemed as critical. So, I look forward to the next couple of weeks. I hope to have some positive comments after that time.

The Cowboys haven't run the screen pass well in recent times. But that doesn't mean it's not an effective play. And it's one of the primary ways of slowing down a pass rush. Saying that, I agree that we need to get better at it if we're going to be seeing it used so often.

I don't like the way we ran our screens but that is why they need to continue to practice running the screen. Just because your not doing it well does not mean you quite using it you just continue to run it in camp until player are doing a better job of running it.

I cringe and just shake my head everytime I see them try and run the screen. It's always a busted play it seems.

Watch some old Cowboys film, with Dorsett. Noone ran a screen like him. With the screen you really need a speedy back, shifty back. The screen is an instant first down if ran right. We haven't had the personnel to run a screen effectively since Dorsett left.

With Thompson, we might have a screen back if he can catch. Maybe Jones even. Last year when I saw Jones moves and feet I swore he'd be great at the screens. I still think so now. Thompsons faster then jones, but I have not seen him bounce through traffic. Make pple miss or the stop and start speed from him yet. Jones has all that.

I think we had a few with R.Anderson when healthy and that was the first I remember working in years.

Either way we need to keep working on them until we can run them....don't just quit doing them because they don't work right now....run them until they do work if need be.

We have backs now that should be able to do well with the screen pass.

We haven't run the screen consistently well since the "guy in the funny hat" was here.

While I agree that Dorsett was great on screens, so was Tim Newsome, Ron Springs and others.

It's all about O-line execution and the QB being deceptive.

Just because we haven't run it well, doesn't mean we shouldn't run it. The Patriots ran it masterfully against the Eagles in the Superbowl. Any team that is getting blitzed a lot (e.g. us with Bledsoe) needs it in the inventory.

I agree. The o-line is more important to the screen pass than the running back. The linemen have to sell the pass rush and then actually get out in space/downfield and block. They haven't done it well since Parcells got here and stated that they would become a good screen team.

Sure, they shouldn't give up on it, but I just don't see it becoming effective. Rivera and Johnson look to have the ability to get out and block screen, but Adams, Allen, and whomever else don't.

Here's hoping they get it to work because I have always liked the screen and think it can be a wonderful tool for an offense. I guess I am spoiled because Landry's team ran it perfectly time and time again(the Pats do a good job of it now).

Yes, don't beleive what that clown campy said..."We can't run the screen pass here in Dallas" Not true, but you can't coach worth a crap anywhere campy...

The screen pass takes alot of timing & practice...

Its vital it be practiced over & over...

We do have backs now who can make it a important weapon in our play book...

great thread, screens can be effective but our screens you can see coming a mile away and they stink. Heck our O-line has to concentrate on just keeping it together nowadays...:abuseme:

I am in favor of putting the screen pass in the ROH along with Aikman, Smith, and Irvin.

Just like Aikman, Smith and Irvin will never play another down in Dallas neither should the screen pass.

I never get tired of the screen pass...it is one of the greatest plays in football, and a beautiful thing to watch...it not only results in big plays sometimes, but it is a relatively safe play that also slows down the other team's pass rush.

However, I am tired of seeing it run and blocked poorly...I haven't seen a good screen game in Dallas since the late 70's, early 80's, but there are other teams that run it great.

The screen passes don't work when you abandon them after a few poor showings. Screen passes take commitment. I also find the ability to run a screen pass says a lot about the discipline of the team. Rivera should be very good at it, because the Packers have been the best screen team in the NFL for a decade.

Parcells ran the screen pass very effectively with the Patriots and the Jets. With all the heavy blitzing in today's game, having the screen is almost essential. I would say that getting the screen pass to work should be our first priority on offense because teams are going to blitz us a lot, and so far it appears that our offensive line isn't up to the challenge.

Yes, Bill did run them very effectively...got some nice long gainers off them, and even better, kept Ds honest with them.

Now they only confuse the oline more than the dline.

Until the agility and the savvy clicks in, they need to go the way of that "30 yard slant pass" I keep reading about here.
