Do you guys think this might be the plan with both safety spots? I'm inclined to think so. We have not seen a sense of urgency about this position. What do you guys think?

I think that's a terrifying thought.

We've played that game before...we saw last year how that turns out. Although I must admit, it's hard for me to believe that either of those guys could be as bad as Ball was last year.

The way i look at it..is like this

If you plan on playing AOA...why not now?

Why wait a few more years, he had a year under his bealt, lets ride it out with him. I doubt anybody we pick up, will be that much better. He has the physical tools, all he needed was the mental.

With reports from last year, how he was all in the books, i have little doubt, he will get it.

I am pulling for him, I think he will shock some.

As am I. And I know its just been a few days of practice, but from the clips I've seen he has looked very comfortable at the safety position. Of course he has the size and speed that you want, but he's looked very instinctive making plays on the ball. It helps that Rob seems to like him too

For heaven's sake, no it's not. Stephen already said we'd be bringing in between 1 and 3 veteran safeties. And the guys who are still available (Huff, Pool, Pollard, Goldson, Elam) are roughly on par with the guys who've already been snatched up, except maybe for Weddle.

There you go!

Just let him play...No need to make a big splash or trade, for someone who might not pan out...home grown is always the best. Physically wise, the other safties we wanted don't match up.

I hope not, don't get me wrong, I like them both but I don't think they're ready to start just yet. Also AOA stays injured. If he starts I doubt he will stay healthy all year meaning we need someone behind him. Right now that is Ball.

This is Jerry teaching us a lesson for whining about safety play last season.

"you think it can't get any worse huh?"

I think starting both those guys together has disaster written all over it. AOA was a project when we drafted him and he hasn't shown anything yet. I like Church but he didn't light the world on fire when he played last year.

Unfortunately it sounds like it's the plan. Jerry said he wants to pick up a safety, possibly two, but he said even if they got two AOA or Church would be seeing a lot of playing time this year. His point was that you draft guys and develop them and then they have to play. If they can't play then you're just not any good at drafting and developing.

We just need the kid to stay healthy in preseason. I'd sign a vet either way.

I don't see why bringing in one or two experienced safeties to start, and then giving your best youngsters a chance to play in a backup role, is supposed to be terrifying. Would you rather our 4th round picks never see the field, or were you under the impression we'd be two-deep with veteran Pro Bowlers at both safety positions?

I was relaying Jerry's position, not mine. Notice I even called it an unfortunate position.

I know, I'm talking about the fact you (not Jerry) called it "unfortunate" that AOA and Church would have to play sometimes. If we sign two veteran safeties, why is it unfortunate that our top youngsters would get playing time as backups?

I thinnk some of you have no patience at all.

We're a couple days removed from the lockout and we have some on here whining about why we don't have 100 FA's signed already.

Personally, i like the moves we've made so far. No flashy, high priced guys, but alot of practical solid signings so far. Free, Kosier, Coleman.. all bring a solid presence to this team, and they came at a reasonable price. No need to try and be the Commanders and buy a championship each year. We've all seen how that has worked out for them.

You have to build a team, not a collection of stars.

Plan? Not at all. Anyone that would be added at safety, is similar to what Dallas faced in the draft...not system changing to blend with a particular talent.

Jerry attempted to get the system changing talent, yesterday...and that player chose another team in preference. That isn't what that plan represented in Jerry's action.

Now, dominating 'plan' is to acquire the best, value at the position of safety. Expectations of expense are steadily shifting down, but base talent of what is on the shelf right now, is really comparable on a talent basis. So the plan is now to acquire the best value, as that will assist when next year's dead money hits front stage. That is still a very sound and good direction/plan.

There are limitations to process, that don't quickly boil down today, to poor preparations or the ability to just draft and prepare. We knew limitations before this year's free agency began to begin with.

But that is beyond a single sentence, and beyond considerations to yourself as well.

Who are you referring to? I don't see anyone in this thread clamoring for a "Star". I see people worried that we seem to be content with our in-house safeties....a pattern we've watched fail over and over again. Our brief successes at the safety position have ALL come from FA recently...not "stars" mind you, but capable veterans.

In our current case, I don't see how bringing in at LEAST one capable vet a the position isn't warranted. I'm all for getting our young guys reps, but going into a season handcuffed to unproven and untested safeties has bit us in the *** more often than not.

Like Kevin Kosner stated in The Postman...things are getting better everyday. There, it was humor. In your posting, RoyTheHammer, it was target on.:)

Im not referring to this thread, but reading the forum over the past couple days, there are alot saying "oh FA is already over at this point, why do we keep bringing in retreads, we arn't trying to upgrade or get better, etc etc".

FA just started. There are alot of options left, even at the safety position. Its been a few days. We all just need to relax and have more patience and confidence that Garrett and Ryan will get the guys they want and will go into the season knowing they can succeed.
