AP: Goodell hopes labor can be settled by Super Bowl

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said a new labor agreement could be in place by the Super Bowl "if we all commit to it and work hard at it."

Goodell made it clear Wednesday that NFL negotiators are willing to do so.

"There's no higher priority than getting a collective bargaining agreement," he said following a day of meetings with NFL team owners. "So we will work night and day to get that done."

Asked whether he expects the same from the NFL Players' Association, Goodell said, "I hope so."

NFLPA spokesman Carl Francis said, "We have no comment at this time."

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)—NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said a new labor agreement could be in place by the Super Bowl “if we all commit to it and work hard at it.”

Goodell made it clear Wednesday that NFL negotiators are willing to do so.

“There’s no higher priority than getting a collective bargaining agreement,” he said following a day of meetings with NFL team owners. “So we will work night and day to get that done.”

Asked whether he expects the same from the NFL Players’ Association, Goodell said, “I hope so.”


The major sticking point is the owners demanding to restructure the players’ share of designated revenues. Another point of contention is the owners wanting to turn two preseason games into regular-season games; the union fears more injuries and has countered with a request for additional roster spots and cutting offseason workouts by about one-third from the current 14 weeks.

Goodell said the league has no deadline, but noted the collective bargaining agreement expires March 4.....

The head of the NFLPA appears to be well suited for a negotiator....finally. He doesn't seem to hit the union's mold of adherent to position and priviledge as long he participates in cash flow. He seems to present a strong and visible side to his actions.

I doubt the issue will be resolved in time for summer camp and I would not be the least bit surprised if there was no season at all in 2011; in fact, I do not expect to be able to watch pro football next year at all. I am hoping that we will lose only one season to this war between the millionaires and the billionaires over your money and the TV revenues.

I hope so, the Cowboys need to get to work once the season is done and any lockout only puts us further behind. Cowboys will be looking to put a staff together and get busy in FA and the draft.

Players get use to a life style and none will be able to get the kind of money they make in the NFL. They went on strike in 87 and after a few weeks players started crossing the picket line to get back to work and the big pay they can get no wheres else. This will get resolved.

Goodell wants to make the players union look like the 'bad guys' who are holding up a new CBA, but the truth is the owners still haven't given the players a good reason for taking a bigger piece of the pie.

With stadiums getting more and more expensive and public financing gone for the forseeable future, there is no way that most of the owners can afford them unless the players are willing to kick in.
