NFL, Walsh closer to agreement on videotaping scandal material

NEW YORK -- Matt Walsh, the former New England Patriots employee said to have tapes of illegal spying by the team, is close to an agreement to turn over information to the NFL.

The NFL said in a statement Sunday night that in the last week, lawyers for Walsh and the league have made "substantial progress toward an agreement that will allow Mr. Walsh to be interviewed."

"Both sides are optimistic that any remaining issues can be addressed successfully and they are committed to reaching a full agreement as promptly as possible," the statement added.

Walsh, a golf pro in Hawaii, has been seeking protection from lawsuits and other legal action, whether by the Patriots or other parties. The two sides have been negotiating for almost a month after reports surfaced just before the Super Bowl that Walsh videotaped a walkthrough practice of the St. Louis Rams before the 2002 title game. It was won by the Patriots 20-17 over the Rams, who were favored by more than two touchdowns.

Walsh's lawyer, Michael N. Levy of the Washington firm of McKee Nelson, confirmed Sunday night that an agreement was near.

"I have consistently asked the NFL to provide appropriate legal protections for Mr. Walsh," Levy said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

"In recent discussions I have had with the league's lawyer, we have made substantial progress toward this end, and I am hopeful that we will be able to craft an agreement with the necessary legal protections so Mr. Walsh can come forward with the truth."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has said Walsh was not interviewed as part of the league's investigation into the videotaping scandal, which involved the league confiscating tapes from a Patriots employee who recorded the New York Jets' defensive signals from the sideline during the opening game of the 2007 season.

Six confiscated tapes and other documents pertaining to the Patriots' taping were subsequently destroyed by the league. Goodell has defended the destruction of the tapes.

As a result of that investigation, New England coach Bill Belichick was fined $500,000 and the team was fined $250,000 and forfeited its 2008 first-round draft choice. That pick would have been 31st overall, but New England still has the seventh overall pick, obtained in a trade with San Francisco last year.

Goodell has also met with Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., who asked pointed questions about taping of both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles. The Patriots beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl XXXIX and the Steelers in two AFC Championship Games.

"As commissioner Goodell has repeatedly emphasized, 'Nobody wants to hear from Matt Walsh more than the National Football League,'" NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Sunday night.

In addition to the negotiations over Walsh's testimony, Willie Gary, who played in that game for the Rams, filed suit in New Orleans last month accusing the Patriots of fraud, unfair trade practices and engaging in a "pattern of racketeering." Three fans joined in the suit.

Specter subsequently said that his interest might be covered by that suit.

"I think now that the lawsuits have been started, that I got the ball rolling, and the plaintiffs' lawyers are picking it up," he said.

Wow! From the sounds of things, and all the trouble Walsh and his lawyers are going through, you would think he has some real good "dirt" on the NE Patriots. And I suspect he does because no NY law firm would be going to all this trouble, and potentiaily taking on the NFL in a highly publisized story, without first reviewing the evidence Walsh has and determining that it is legitimate. If the law firm thougt the evidence was shaky at best, then I don't think they'd be going through all this trouble. It will be intersting to see how this all plays out. I just hope it does before the draft so NE can lose its #7 first round pick! :D

right now the NFL cannot destroy any more tapes because there is an independent lawasuit pending against the NE Patriots' fraudulent racketeering practices, and any tapes Walsh has would be requested as evience in that case. Destryonig them would now clearly be obstruction of justice and the NFL is not dumb enough to risk losing its antitrust exemption over destroying tapes related to the the criminal activity of one franchise.

This is where this thing is going to get really messy. I'm sure more players will come forward and follow suit if Walsh has some really incriminating evidence.

Regarding the league though, if they have enough evidence what would they do. Would they really strip the franchise and the players of thier rings? I am really curious about what the commish will do in that case.

Personally

I don't think they should strip them of the titles and rings. However, I think that they should ban Belicheck for life and force the sale of the pats or have a 5 year no playoff ban (which would effectively kill the team).

I like that part about the senator talking with the commissioner and the pendiing lawsuit against patriots, now GOODELL cant destoy any tapes.

Guys, i am all for starting a petition to send to NFL and Goodell that we want the other # 1 pick, and possibly their # 2 pick taken away if Belicheck did more than what he told Goodell. And Goodell has to show the tapes and whats on them as evidence, then he can clean up the Patriots.

At the same time, with the patriots losing their other # 1 pick, and possibly their # 2, if us fans get together and show how we disapprove of cheating, and demand more severe punishment, then by the patriots losing their other # 1 pick, maybe # 2 pick, then that will move us closer in the draft one position closer to a better pick. I AM ALL FOR THAT, SO LIKE INSTEAD OF PICKING 22ND WE WILL BE PICKING 21ST, AND INSTEAD OF PICKING 62ND IN 2ND ROUND WE WILL BE PICKING 61ST,

Remember now, a few years back, we were all set in my mind to take Wolfolk NT that plays for Patriots now, the patriots picked him right before us, and about 9 years ago a super player that fell in draft was picked with the 21st pick, Randy Moss. If you look in the draft, some players that fall are taken from the 15th pick to the 21st pick like emmitt smith, warren sapp, randy moss, cb crombie chargers,

Here is composite list of late draft picks, 15th to 24th, some late gems;
2007 draft

20
New York Giants Aaron Ross
CB
Texas
21 Jacksonville (from Denver) Reggie Nelson
FS
Florida
22
Cleveland (from Dallas)
Brady Quinn
QB
Notre Dame
23
Kansas City Dwayne Bowe
WR
LSU

2006 draft
19 San Diego Antonio Cromartie
CB Florida State 20
Kansas City
Tamba Hali
DE Penn State 21
New England Laurence Maroney RB
Minnesota

2004 draft
16.
Philadelphia (from San Francisco) Shawn Andrews OT Arkansas
17.
Denver (from Cincinnati) D.J. Williams LB Miami
18.
New Orleans Will Smith DE Ohio State
19.
Miami (from Minnesota) Vernon Carey OT Miami
20.
Minnesota (from Miami) Kenechi Udeze DE Southern Cal
21.
New England (from Baltimore) Vince Wilfork DT Miami
22.
Buffalo (from Dallas) J.P. Losman QB Tulane
23.
Seattle Marcus Tubbs DT Texas
24.
St. Louis (from Denver thru Cincinnati) Steven Jackson TB Oregon State

2003 draft
18 Arizona (from Miami thru New Orleans) Calvin Pace DE Wake Forest 19 Baltimore (from New England) Kyle Boller QB California 20 Denver George Foster OT Georgia
21
Cleveland
Jeff Faine C Notre Dame
22
Chicago (from New York Jets)
Rex Grossman QB Florida 23 Buffalo (from Atlanta) Willis McGahee RB Miami 24 Indianapolis Dallas Clark TE Iowa 25 New York Giants William Joseph DT Miami 26 San Francisco Kwame Harris OT Stanford 27 Kansas City (from Pittsburgh) Larry Johnson RB Penn State

2002 draft
20 Green Bay Javon Walker WR Florida State 21 New England Dan Graham TE Colorado 22 New York Jets Brian Thomas DE Alabama-Birmingham
23
Oakland
Napoleon Harris LB Northwestern
24
Baltimore
Edward Reed FS Miami

so, to me, what i would do if your the cowboys and you see a player falling, and you can get him say 17th pick to 20th pick, just lose a 3rd or 4th rounder, then go for it, if reasonable, but say at 18th pick, and on your board, 4-5 top players are still there, dont give away the ship, move up if you can, but if not, dont, but if the players are falling by 17th pick or so, dont wait,

then what i would do, i would trade down your 28th pick to miami or atlanta, and get that pick back, maybe a higher pick, then what you originally had. This team to me, isnt too far from being a super bowl winner, but we need a few playmakers on this team, and WE NEED TO FIND OUT WHY WE ARE ALWAYS FLAT IN DECEMBER, THAT IS A MUST, FIX THAT, GET 3-4 TOP PLAYERS, THEN LOOK OUT, THIS TEAM WILL BE BUILT FOR 5-7 YEAR RUN.

we still need a top cb, top wr, top backup rb to spell barber, a top NT backup, a backup fullback, and a special teams punt returner, and a few special teams demons, aka keith davis, bill bates, etc.

Hopefully they can get some of this stuff done before the draft and if more incriminating evidence appears he can punish them this year and not next.

..then you can only go after the offenders on this.

That would not be the individual players and their rings or taking their Titles away as a team.

It would mean however that more fines will happen and they could lose more #1 picks for another year or two..or maybe all their picks even for an entire draft year..

..or maybe stop them from having any increase in their cap next year when it increases so they are prohibited from pursuing FA's or at least restrict them from doing so.

If this really has happened and the NFL has not done the proper things in handling this, Goodell should immediately resign, too.

And also lose his legal immunity as being the Commissioner of the NFL and be held accountable for his failure to correctly discharge his responsibilites as Commissioner in this matter the first time around.

That means the NFL will not indemnify his court costs or defend him if he gets into legal entanglements over any of this from the other teams or other players filing suit over this case.

That would be a real reality check, but justified if Goodell is at all found to have conspired to destroy or conceal the truth in this.

This is going to be real interesting, folks.
