The Associated Press has decided not to strip the 2009 defensive rookie of the year award from Texans linebacker Brian Cushing.

Instead, the AP will simply redo the vote.

According to Bob Glauber of Newsday, Cushing will remain eligible. Thus, in theory, he could win it again.

Maybe that's why we're now hearing that Cushing "took and passed a lie detector test." The P.R. effort already has begun -- and we hope that the AP voters won't fall for it.

The award could now go to Bills safety Jairus Byrd, or Packers linebacker Clay Matthews.

Meanwhile, since the AP apparently is in the mood to "get it right," how about considering a new voting system that awards points for first place, second place, and third place, instead of merely casting one vote per voter?

Interesting.

Just because Cushing was caught juicing up now doesn't mean he was last year. One would think he would have been caught last year if he was.

And up until now, I don't know the circumstances to the positive test. Was it some cold remedy he took just before he was tested? Or was he doping up and tried to get away with it?

I have mixed feelings. It would send a pretty strong message to others if he were to be stripped of the award. That would be a good thing IMO. But unless they have proof he was taking steroids while he was playing last year, it seems a bit unfair to strip him of the award.

One can easily make a case both ways.

He failed the test early last season only reason it is coming out now is because he appealed the result.

Per Adam Schefter:

RT @BobGlauber: Just got off the phone with AP Sports Editor Terry Taylor. There will be a re-vote of NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Per Mort:

RT @jabbered: @mortreport @SI_PeterKing If there is a re-vote, can people still vote for Cushing? #nfl >> yes is my understanding

What a trainwreck program USC became.

What if Clay Matthes now wins this?

Or do the voters not even vote for him now because they suspect anyone coming from USC could be juicing.

They should not have opened this door.

The NFL has to be pissed at the AP for doing this.

If that's the case, I am OK with it. It sends a pretty strong message to other players.

"I was substance-tested randomly by the NFL during the 2009 season. The results of those tests indicated the presence of a non-steroidal banned substance. The League acted to suspend me based on those results, which I challenged in my appeal of the suspension. I believe we presented compelling evidence during the appeal process to challenge the test results, and I disagree with and am disappointed by the suspension. Bound by the decision of the League, I regret the situation it presents to the Texans' organization, my teammates, and our fans.

Boy will some people be pissed off if Cushing still wins it despite this. I'm not saying he will, and I doubt that he will, but I'd hate to see how some would react to the idea that he won anyway, simply because the people voting didn't care.

I assume every rookie is in the running.
but i mean as a top guy. he had one less tackle than Matthews and one more sack

All joking aside, there is no explanation for Victor Butler to not take this award.

I mean . . . dude had like 2 sacks against the Eagles. I know I couldn't have been the only one to see that.

I like the idea of a revote.

I hate it. The season is long over and teams have moved onto preparing for the coming season.

I'd hate to be the person that wins after a re vote too. How valuable of an award is it now that the winner will be the second choice. If I won it now, I'd tell em to put it where the sun don't shine.

Do you realize that most rookies would reach some incentives in their contracts if they win the ROY, I HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt any one of them will be too upset about winning it and getting some more money.

They should have just taken it away from the cheater and given it to the second-place guy.
