Jabari Fletcher is a big guy with a big personality, and last Saturday he had perhaps his biggest game to date. Fletcher, 6-3, 274-pound defensive end for Appalachian State, made a career-high 11 tackles, including 3.5 for losses and two sacks, in a 37-14 victory over Western Carolina. He also had two quarterback hurries and recovered a fumble as the Mountaineers limited the Catamounts to 88 yards rushing.
“I’m just trying to do my part to help us win a national championship, but Southern Conference championship first,” said Fletcher, a senior who has 19.5 career sacks, more than any current player in the SoCon.
A combination of size and speed, which brought Fletcher offers from several FCS programs while he was in high school, have created an opportunity for Fletcher to be successful on the football field.
“He’s 274, and he can run,” Speir said. “A lot of the (NFL) scouts are coming in and they all want to find a big man who can run like he can. He can eat up ground with his strides. The abilities are there. The big thing is consistency and focus for 60 minutes, and that’s what he’s working on. When he does that, he makes big plays.
