April 8th: News, Notes & Workout Results!

After suffering a hairline fracture in his shoulder blade at the Senior Bowl, Illinois guard Jon Asamoah had his pro-day today and he did not disappoint. We’ve got the news first for you plus a host of information on the players teams are bringing in for visits or personal work outs.
Two dozen teams were on hand at Illinois today including nine offensive line coaches to watch guard Jon Asamoah workout. His pro-day ended just minutes ago.

Asamoah surprised those in attendance with his athleticism and movement skills. His forty was timed as fast as 5.04 seconds while his short shuttle clocked 4.51 seconds. Asamoah’s vertical jump was 27-inches and broad 8’11’’.

He completed 22-reps on the bench press, not a great number but one must take into consideration Asamoah resumed bench pressing for the first time last week since initially injuring his shoulder blade at the Senior Bowl the week of January 25th.

Later in the workout Asamoah looked terrific in position drills. He’ll now battle Mitch Petrus of Arkansas to be the second guard off the board in two weeks.

Another Big Ten player coming off an injury from the Senior Bowl and getting a lot of attention recently is Wisconsin defender O’Brien Schofield.

Schofield, you may remember, tore a knee ligament during the first day of Senior Bowl practice. His rehab has been going very well.

Schofield is up to 239-pounds since weighing 221lbs at the combine. There’s a chance he could start jogging as soon as next week. He’s likely to start the season on the PUP list or the franchise that selects him in the draft could chose to place him on IR for the year with the expectations that Schofield returns 100% in 2011.

Best case scenario has Schofield coming off the PUP list around week seven of the 2010 season and being placed on an active roster. Where will he be drafted?

We presently grade Schofield as a 7th round choice though some feel he could go as early as the 5th frame. He visited with the New York Jets at their facility yesterday and has almost another half dozen official visits lined up.

Defensive back Robert McClain of UConn is drawing a lot of interest after his solid pro-day of March 24th. He’s been on official visits to see the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans. McClain has also had workouts with the San Francisco 49ers and Indianapolis Colts.

The Houston Texans also privately worked out Oklahoma State safety Andre Sexton.

Another sleeper prospect that’s been on the move is Vanderbilt linebacker Patrick Benoist. Already this week Benoist has worked out for the Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans. We will have a full scouting report on Benoist posted later this week.

I would love Schofield in the 6-7 round. Outstanding player until he got hurt.

Asamoah and Petrus are my one and two Guards. I like them both better then Iupati. Asamoah handled Odrick head to head. Petrus is the best combination of Strength and agility of any of the prospects IMO. This guy went from TE to FB to OG in a run oriented offense and made 2nd team SEC. He then spent the entire 08 season on IR and came back in 2009 to a completely different scheme designed around throwing the ball and made 1st team all SEC. I would be happy to get either one of these guys.

if we pick up a second 6th rounder put me down for o'brian he was easily 2nd round material before he got hurt and was making the tackle prospects at the senior bowl look like turn stiles. for a sixth its no biggie to redshirt him for the year till he gets back to 100%.

Love to take Schoefield in the 6th or 7th and stash him for a year.
