The situation is almost identical to Lance, except we gave away a 5th round pick instead of a 4th that we gave back. To make matters more interesting is that Milton was drafted in the 6th round, so the Pats did better in the end unlike how the 9ers made out. On the surface it seems like he is pegged as a backup, but how comfortable are we with this? Has GM Jones stated he will be our backupo? He also has limited games at QB, and it wasn't until his last year at TENN that he saw playing time.I don't see your point. His immediate role is as backup, and the backup isn't supposed to see meaningful action outside injury to the starter. That's not unique to the Cowboys.
As with Lance, time will tell if he can develop into anything more, but it's not the same as Lance because the Cowboys will have spent a lot less to find out about Milton. And there is no Cooper Rush anymore, so barring some other move Milton appears to be the immediate backup, and not the 3rd teamer.
And Dak Prescott is getting older, and building quite a history of injury, so it make sense to have a young guy in the development stages

Imagine the possibilities of drafting a young QB if we haven't thrown away our 4th round picks over the last few years? Jerry is throwing darts at a dart board that is 400 feet away from him.....
I was so worried they would do this for a 3rd....but they did it for the equivalent of a 6th....fantastic move
I don't know. It depends if it is a mechanical issue. Players can work on footwork, arm angle, etc., to improve their accuracy.Brissett is what he is. A good backup with little upside. Lock? That’s debatable. Milton is a specimen but his accuracy issue is a major problem. I think that is hard to correct.
I hear you, but I am not interested in a cap hit to have a quality backup. The reality is that Dak cannot be trusted to stay healthy after 2 awful injuries, and he is not again well. If Jerry made this trade to solidify our QB situation, in no way am I as a fan comfortable with this. This all goes back to us not signing Dak to that contract, and then trying stuff like this. Unless Dak goes down with another significant injury, these is 0 chance our new QB plays/developsThey are not the same.
1. Look at the cap hit. Lance had a $34 million contract with all of it guaranteed, and Milton has a $4 million contract with only $183 thouusand guaranteed.
2. They gave up a 4th rounder for Lance. They swapped a 5th rounder for a 7th rounder for Milton.
3. Cooper Rush was an experienced veteran backup who had won games for the Cowboys and was ahead of Lance on then depth chart. At least for now it appears Milton is the direct backup to Dak.
As for how the Niners and Pats came out, that information is relevant to those teams, not the Cowboys. The Pats didn't really come out much better anyway. All told they essentially gave up a 6th and 7th round pick and got a 5th round pick in return. Some gain as long as Milton doesn't develop at least into a quality backup, and a loss if he does.
As for lost 4th round picks in the past, that may be a shame, but the team can't go back in time and the trade for Milton could only be based on where things stand today
They got this one right IMO.........

Who cares about a back-up QB, that's got no future. Even with Dak we'll be lucky to even get the 7th Seed one and done. If Dak goes down, or doesnt perform, it's a race to a better draft pick.Sure, but this guy will never see any meaningful action outside of an injury to Dak. Trey Lance redux is all this is, and if Dak goes down we are still cooked having failed to bring in an established backup QB. Maybe Andrew Dalton is still looking for a job?
He may be the closer. imagine the SF play-off games. Would of thought 'touch' on shorter passes is a lot easier to train and develop rather than an arm that's found wanting over average ......helping defenses shorten the field.....especially as we're looking to run the ball.Except…
JM can’t throw a football 5 feet.
His draft Bio is a train wreck.
Why not find a cheap QB who can at least be accurate?
Yep, there's the factor that, unlike Lance with his 1-3 drafting, they've potentially looked at the talent/abilities (compared to what's available in mid-rounds of the draft), rather than being swayed by his draft/college potential. And Milton appears to have his stock trending up with known teams interested in him, meanwhile the 49ers couldn't wait to dump Lance.
I don't know, I bet Jerry mentions that draft grade "logic" about Milton. That was the entire basis for the Mingo trade only six or so months ago.Yep, there's the factor that, unlike Lance with his 1-3 drafting, they've potentially looked at the talent/abilities (compared to what's available in mid-rounds of the draft), rather than being swayed by his draft/college potential.
This^^^^^ and post #59That’s why I’m happy with this move because I honestly don’t think we’re playoff contenders and any development at any position will make this a successful season. When playoffs are unlikely, player/position development is key IMHO.
