Archer: Why did the Cowboys waive cornerback Dax Swanson Monday? They needed a roster spot briefly as a procedural move for when they moved Randy Gregory from the reserve/did not report list to the reserve/suspended list. Swanson could return but the Cowboys will have a slew of players in for workouts today.

Just as I suspected, being that the 1st week is over and you don't have to guarantee anything.

Does it strike anyone else as weird that procedure calls for a roster player to be waived in order to move another player from one reserve designation to another reserve designation?

They should have addressed the team's issues in the off season - you know - how other teams do it...

I heard they're bringing in Mario Williams and Dwight Freeney for workouts.

Or that they called them anyway.

Yes, it's quite stupid. I know the NFL doesn't want reserve designations to give a team an advantage in stashing players, but the league goes too far with its procedures to prevent it.
