Anyway, on to the Wonders:

1. I wonder if Jerry Jones wonders about the defensive switch he initiated in the offseason when Rob Ryan and the 3-4 scheme were fired for Monte Kiffin and the 4-3 scheme. Of course, he doesn't because that would mean Jones would have to realize the personnel he has put together on defense is flawed. The Cowboys can pay $50 million to a cornerback (Brandon Carr), trade up to the sixth pick for one (Morris Claiborne), pay top dollar for a defensive end (DeMarcus Ware) and extend their middle linebacker (Sean Lee) and not get the results. This isn't to blame those guys for the defensive woes, but the holes on the defense are obvious and were obvious before Anthony Spencer, Tyrone Crawford and Jay Ratliff were hurt. Games are won and lost up front and the Cowboys were content to go into the season with Crawford as the top backup defensive end, despite his inexperience, and Ratliff as the vaunted three-technique, even though there was real evidence he was a declining player. George Selvie and Nick Hayden are good role players as a fifth or sixth or seventh defensive linemen, not starters. Every defensive lineman is now “playing up” a level, so to speak, and the lack of pressure is killing the defense. Jones needed more foresight not because of injury, per se, but recent history and demonstrated ability.

3. I wonder if the Cowboys continue to attack offensively the way they did against the Broncos. If they don't, then I'll wonder why they didn't. Tony Romo was brilliant, according to many people after the game even with the turnover. The Cowboys attacked with their passing game. Romo trusted the pass protection. The receivers were able to get down the field. They went to an empty look plenty of times and flourished. With the defense struggling the way it has, the Cowboys need to go after other teams the way Peyton Manning goes after defenses. They can't play passively and hope the defense holds the opponent to 20 points. They need to go for the throat with Dez Bryant, Austin, Jason Witten, Terrance Williams, DeMarco Murray, Gavin Escobar, Dwayne Harris and Cole Beasley. Spread the field and go and live with the consequences. If you're going to go down, go down swinging.

4. I'm not a big fan of projecting numbers out, but sometimes it's fun. I wonder if people realize just how well Romo has played through the first five games.

George Selvie is more than a role player to me. He is a legit NFL starter until he proves otherwise.

The defense does look terrible though. I expect NFL defenses to get lit up but teams are just marching down the field uncontested.

We have to be more dynamic in this scheme. More press coverage with the DB's.

2. The trade deadline is Oct. 29 and it seems like we are seeing more deals than there have been in the past. So I wonder if the Cowboys will get into any serious trade talks to help the defense.
If we can get some DL help without breaking the bank I'm all for it.

Selvie has been a journeyman. On the other hand he is on pace for roughly 10 sacks which would be tremendous.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

So what exactly is Archer proposing they have done? Crawford was an emerging young talent, Rat is a former pro bowler who was supposed to excel in this scheme, Spencer was the team's best defensive player a year ago and they had hopes for Bass. Both Kiffin and Maranelli felt very confident they had enough horses up front, you just can't anticipate so many players going down in one group.

Man-everyone is a genius in hindsight. The salary cap does not allow for infinite depth at every position anymore, particularly when you are paying a franchise QB franchise money. The Seahawks and Niners will find out soon.

Selvie has been better than a journeyman lineman so far IMO, the problem today is the same problem as yesterday, no push in the middle of the line. Quarterbacks are still able to step up into the pocket, Ware and Selvie would probably have better stats is the middle of the line flushed the QB out every once in awhile.

The average age of the 4 projected DL starters (Spencer, Ratliff, Hatcher, and Ware) is what 30 or 31? It was debated here on CZ all over the summer that there was a lot of risk going moving to a new 4-3 that kind of age, injury history, and the fact that you had to convert to 3-4 OLBs to down lineman.

NOBODY should be surprised about Rat. Anybody with half a brain realized he wasn't someone that could be counted on. D. Ware exited last season with half of his body broken -- the move to the 4-3 was only going to subject Ware to a more physical beating.

I'm not sure of this required a ton of hindsight.

I don't care if he is a journeyman. All I can go by is what i've seen here and the drop off from Spencer to Selvie is hardly noticable.

I was one of those people who wanted them to add dline help, however it cannot be ignored that both the new d coordinator (who has been a football guy since the dark ages) and his understudy/dline coach both really liked the tean's depth at the position.
