After Roy Williams made the comments that he's not coming off the bench in 2010, it was construed by some as a guy staking his territory, unwilling to help the new guy, Dez Bryant.

Actually, I think Williams' comments should be applauded. He feels confident in his ability that he will fend off any and all challenges this summer. Every player should view himself as a starter. In no way was Williams slighting Bryant. In fact, he said he welcomes Bryant to the team and would help him.

So what happened Monday during the first organized team activity? Williams was teaching Bryant, telling him to get to a certain depth in a route and how to come in and out of his breaks. He was a veteran helping a rookie.

"He told me if I needed anything, don't hesitate to ask, that he'll help me," Bryant said, "and it made me happy."

This is how it is supposed to work in the NFL. A veteran passes on the knowledge, the tricks of how to get it done, how to get better. In turn, it makes the team better. Does it happen all the time? Not necessarily. Back in the late 1990s when I was covering the Bengals, a veteran outside linebacker intentionally told a rookie the wrong things to do to preserve his spot.

Maybe that's why the team finished 3-13 that year.

More fodder for the Roy Williams fan club.

"it was construed by some as a guy staking his territory, unwilling to help the new guy, Dez Bryant." Really? Or are you making that up to write this article?

Roy Williams wants to win.

He's the consumate team player. And his numbers were very good for a #2.

People break his balls because of what we paid in terms of money, and draft picks to acquire him.

Neither are his fault.

I'm a RW11 fan.

There's no denying which player is wearing Michael Irvin's number now. As to who is Alvin Harper, hey, Dallas now has two receivers with every bit of that talent. Spreading the opportunity only allows for more opportunity in isolated coverage and the ability to really break open some great gainers.

'Hole,' I like Roy Williams a whole lot also, and don't think that drops or wrong routes will be a problem of his play over the long term. I think Roy W and Miles Austin improve with the presence of Dez Bryant.

Roy W is going to end up being some strong player for the Cowboys as well.

I didn't want to say this on the forums, because I was hesitant to spoil the end of the season for you all . . .

But I've seen the future. And Roy Williams catches the game winning TD in the Super Bowl, a la Plaxico/Holmes.

Was with you until you said his numbers were very good for a #2. Look around the league at teams with good offenses, RW11 had extremely poor numbers, and his drops caused his QB to almost completely ignore him the last quarter of the season. I'm hoping like crazy that he turns it around this year, but he was terrible last season, by all measurables, including numbers.

do we want Roy teaching Dez!!!? just asking.

If Roy wasn't compensated so much there would be no reason not to like him.

You have to consider that not every team has a Jason Witten.

Jason Witten is in reality, this teams #2 (some might argue #1).

Think back to the Triplets . . . Alvin Harper was a very good #2, but his best season was what Roy's was last year.

Dez should listen and learn and "soon the student shall be the teacher."
On another note, I sure do miss Irvin the Playmaker. Too bad we didn't clone him.:D

You know something, I think it sucks to root against a player....if you have a favorite, then root for him. I hate backstabbing concepts applied to another fan's following the work, sweat, and yes...dedication by a player of interest to him. Rooting against a player then is kind of like ring tapping, social favor as opposed to merely team loyalty. I am one who doesn't feel that Roy W is the 'dark horse' in the house. That stated, I am honest enough to give a real evaluation following the season...but for now, he is saddled up with quite a job on his hands. I'll root him until storylines are changed for my chosen team. As to using my post as a crutch to swing at Roy W or another, choose a point of contention or leave my posts out of your crutch to attack another poster with it's use.

A year later we trade him to the Bears for a 5th round pick.

Roy is not who I want mentoring Dez. I hope Miles is doing his part also.

I'm not rooting against him. He's had his time to make an impact and he hasn't done so. He is a garbage WR and I don't expect him to step it up nor do I want him to influence or young WR's especially when he's running wrong routes and his routes suck. But whatever I guess none of that matters he's from Texas went to UT and throws up the longhorns sign. So he can't do no wrong.

That would bother me if anyone on this forum respected your opinion.
