Are fans treating the draft too numerically?

I have to say, I'm the worst offender. For months, I was plugging in various scenarios, and one of my favorites was a trade back with SF for their 61st pick. That represented perfect "value" for me. And as such, when I first saw the trade, I jumped for joy...and such joy soon devolved into extreme frustration about a lack of perceived "value."

Then, when we pick T. Fred., my feelings were mixed. He is a guy I've been high on for a while, but I was again worried about a lack of perceived "value" where he was picked.

And then I had a epiphany....why am I making this so mathematical? It seems almost ludicrous. In the end, we got a tough, strong, smart, FOOTBALL player. A guy who is plug-in-and-play from the get-go. And we will have another chance to pick a guy who may fit the same mold.

I've been the biggest BPA proponent for a while, but in the end, we got this guy:

And you know what...that's a football player right there. I like this guy, and I don't care what you say about "value." That beard alone is worth the 31st overall pick.

The draft is ALL about numbers. The scouts already know which guys are football players, and which aren't - that's what they are for. The key for the rest of the front office is to figure out a way to get as many of those guys as you can. You don't do that by reaching for guys you could have a round later.

Yes, value matters.

Upgraded the OL and gain the valuable extra pick needed. That more than overrides any small gain or loss in any kind of numbering system you want to judge the draft by.

But you can't be sure you'll get them later.

I've seen mocks where Pugh was picked by the Cowboys in the 2nd.

The Giants put a spanner in that prediction.

It happens all the time.
