Are running QBs our Kryptonite?

Think on the losses...
Cam (2018 #4 ranked QB rusher at 463 yds), Wilson (6, 376), Watson (3, 549), Mariotta (8, 357)...
Smith finished year #14 overall and missed how many games w a broken leg? We lost to him (14, 168 at 4.1 per) And higher than I would have thought, Luck was #16 (16, 148, 3.2 per).

In the games Dallas lost the QB was no lower than #16 as a QB rusher. None of them really crushed us with their rushing yards. Cam had 58. Watson 40. Hell, Russell Wilson had -2 in week 3, but being a running QB implies mobility or perhaps having to use a spy and maybe that messes us up? At the very least does their mobility give them an extra second or two to get off a pass and negate some of the upfield pass rush, enough time to put added pressure on a slightly overated secondary?

Now look at the statues we've beaten:

Eli (44, only 20 yards rushing. Has pigeon **** on his shoulder he's such a statue), Stafford (32, 71 (lower than I would have thought)), Wentz (31, 91), Ryan (23, 125), Brees (42, 22), McCoy (34, 63 (not so bad as it was 10 rushes only). The two real outliers here are Bortles (7, 365) and Winston (10, 283)

Trend? I can't for the life of me figure out how the spread went from 2.5 to 1.5 so fast and this was the only thing I could come up with (that and Seattle plays well under the lights in national games). Are people thinking Tank and Gregory aren't the "stay at home" types and this will cause trouble going against a mobile QB? Does Dallas D performance drop off (more than it usually would) if you have a spy? Does the sophisticated stats person take into account that when our D line does well it's against scarecrows like Eli and Brees only? Did we do anything special to contain Winston or was TB already in "we don't care" mode when we played them?

Four of the six losses came from QBs ranked 8 or higher in rushing. Eight of the ten wins came against guys ranked 30 or lower. I'd be telling the DEs to contain and the interior to let fly this weekend, but does that take away from this defenses natural instincts (which are great IMHO) and slow them slightly?

They been getting better against the running QB’s. But for years they hurt us big time.
Now it seems they been a little better.

We will see what happens though this time, as if they can foigure it out agaomst not just a running QB, or more like a QB that can run. But also has a Running game with different RB”s.

Our coaches and players have stated that the Dline is coached to play the run on the way to the passer. Rush first, play run on the way.

It has its pros and cons like any strategic choice and one con is that it's hard to maintain contain with that mindset, so we over pursue and the pocket gets flushed. It's especially deadly if the QB can throw on the run.

Difference between early games and now is that LVE and Smith have developed so much, and sideline-to-sideline LBs give you more security against a mobile QB breaking contain and killing you from the flat.

I don’t have any data but it seems we’ve had trouble with running QB’s since my childhood, which was a long long time ago. But I’m sure that just my perception because I HATE watching those guys running around.

For sure. QBs like McNabb, Vick, Griffin, dominated Dallas with ease. Although it's worth noting that Dallas still beat them fairly often anyway.

McNabb used to give us fits until he got chunky from all those soups.

This is a repeat discussion from a month or so ago.

I ran some numbers and saw we've given up close to the same points per game to running Qbs as we have to pocket Qbs. The issue has been that in those games our offense hasn't played as well.

Dual threat QBs are trouble for everyone. Wilson and his receivers seem like they are connected by ESP or something. When he is in trouble and gets out of the pocket their receivers always seem to know when and they are good at separating from their defender to help Wilson out. It would be nice if our receivers would help Dak like that. When I watch replays of him getting sacked, I always see receivers running waaay down field as if there is no possibility that dak in trouble and the closet man is more than 10 yards away. He needs his receivers to know when he in trouble and run to where he needs them.

Yes, I remember losing to freakin' Eric Hipple !!!

To be honest, I don’t view Newton or Wilson as , “ running quarterbacks”

Cam Newton has proven in this league that he can make every throw in the game, monster arm

Wilson is another above average passer that can really put beautiful touch on a pass, especially the deep ball

They are both excellent Passing Quarterbacks that have the ability to run effectively as well. Like Steve Young did back in the day.

Dakota on the other hand is the #21 qbr ranked Quarterback which perfectly reflects his ability to neither pass nor run better than the average of his peers

If we lose this game I think Wilson will have a big day running the ball.

I think we’re going to be keyed on stopping their rushing attack and our guys may be too aggressive. I can see the Hawks running a lot of RPO and bootlegs.
