Are the contracts a distraction?

Some thoughts about this year and how the contracts in one way or another have come into play, possibly becoming a distraction.

1) Jason Garret— He’s coaching without a contract for next year. What has this done to negatively affect how he’s went about the season or each week? Would you work as hard if you knew you might not be in your same position next year? Especially if you had enough money where it really didn’t matter? JG really doesn’t have typical HC powers, so it’s not like he’s controlling his own destiny anyways. His coaching life is in the hands of a very old DC, and a very young and inexperienced OC and STC.

2.) Dakota Prescott— For the first several games of the season, Dak put his middle finger up in Jerrys face and said you’re going to pay me like Russell Wilson. And, just like any typical Cowboys player contract year, he was proving the world wrong, and playing way better than he will probably play again. (I’m not wrong, see past players who got paid before and after threads). Well, JJ called his bluff and said, nope we aren’t paying you RW type money. Jerry won and Jerry lost with this negotiation tactic. He won’t have to pay Dak 40 million a year now that Dak has considerably slowed down. But, He got in his franchise QB’s head by not paying him, and Dak has been playing pretty bad for the last few weeks .

3) Zeke Elliot— Zeke did what was right for Zeke and he won. He knew his body wasn’t the same. He knew the team would transition to more of a passing team with KM, and he told the world he wasn’t playing without being the highest paid RB. Everybody who knows anything about football, even the biggest Zeke fans, new he wouldn’t ever live up to that contract. But, because JJ gave it to him, he has to try. And, KM has to try. And the OL has to try. This contract affected the entire season, from top to bottom. In games we should’ve ran, we passed. And in games we should’ve passed we ran. The contract definitely came into thoughts while making these game decisions.

4) Tank Lawernce— We can keep saying it over and over. Eventually everyone will realize that when guys get paid, they don’t play as good as they did. This is not a myth, it’s beyond real. Most of these guys aren’t the type who are good enough, or competitive enough to care about wanting to be one of the best ever. They aren’t made up like HOF type guys. When they signed the dotted line for the second contract, The Big One, this is what they’ve been shooting for their entire lives. Unfortunately, The culture in Dallas isn’t championship, it hasn’t been in 25 years. The culture is individualism. ME is what matters. Tank is the epitome of this brand of player in Dallas.

5) Amari Cooper.— People have been asking for weeks now what’s wrong with Amari. He’s the quiet guy. He's not a prima donna or Not the Diva like most #1 WR’s. I respect that. And he’s a helluva great player when he wants to be. So much so, that when he plays like he’s been playing, it almost seems like he’s doing it on purpose. He looks pouty some times, and Like Dak, he’s been wanting his money for a while now. Why should he play as hard as he does, as hurt as he does, and be as good as he is, and not get paid?

These are all contract related issues that could be seen as parts of our problems here on Dallas this year.

If Dak had won the league MVP and the Super Bowl he still wouldn't have got $40M a year.

Once fully recovered from his surgery, Tank has been playing at pro bowl level football. Some people just are just wrongly look at his sack totals.

No one is asking whats wrong with Cooper. Everyone knows his injury list is lengthy.

Absolutely , Moore is Daks best bud. He wants to do everything in his power for him to get paid. Stephan and Jerry both want Dak to pad his stats too. They want to be justified in giving Dak a contract. There’s speculation that Zeke held out purposely because he saw the direction the team was going and knew he better get his money now because he wouldn’t be a focal point this year.

Yeah, so much uncertainty. It's weird. I wonder if this is the way Stephen Jones does things.

Romo got the same treatment when he signed his big deals, then when he was replaced people flipped and got on his jock.

Murray nobody thought he was worth the money Philly gave him, Then were crying with Dallas couldnt score from the 1 and started with the if Murray was here thats a td, the FO blew it.

Dez nobody thought he was worth the money, when he was cut the Cowboys are wrong for cutting him.

Fans love players when theyre making hundreds of thousands, hate them when they make tens of millions.

This was actually mentioned before the season started. Some pundit said they need to get Dak and Cooper signed before the season. So it would not linger on through the season.

I swear Dak did not run as much when he could have. Wanted to force the pass, pad stats and not take the hits to risk injury.
Now I totally do not mean that, but just seemed like it at times.

Well, we could give every coach and player whatever contract they ask for and not have to bother with contracts at all ...

Couldn’t we?

Well, maybe not.

Only thing that would piss me off is if Dak is purposely passing it more to pad his stats for a contract. Audible out of run plays to pass more would be very disappointing.

What evidence do we have of this? The evidence is we are passing so much because we are falling behind frequently, and also because there are games the run gets shut down.

Of course they are. Elliott getting paid had a ripple effect for certain. Smith getting paid basically extinguished his competitive flow. And Prescott is trying too hard to prove that he is an elite passer worth a megadeal instead of just doing what should be second nature to him, which is run and pass like he did his first season and in college.

Getting paid is the Cowboy Way.

It’s human nature. You work your azz off to get paid. Once you get that big payday and guaranteed money, it’s natural to get lax to some degree. These NFL players are no different than us, in fact probably younger. It’s just their paydays are a lot larger.

I'm starting to believe some of its jealousy....... some posters make their contract so personal

No evidence. Only saying if it was true I would be upset. Last few games the run game was going well and abandon it when your not down by that much. Run the ball and control the clock. Keep our Defense and there offense off the field.

When the HC is a lame duck and it's apparent that he is gone, players start playing for themselves and coachess start coaching for themselves. They know the new coach will make changes and the want to individually impress either him or the next team they may end up on. Team play goes out the window.
I've seen it happen. It happens in HS too. Especially Texas where coaches get paid very handsomely!

I agree with this post. I think that $ has ruined the game. Even during the games and especially on the pregame shows they openly talk about the players getting paid. It is what drives the game now and it becomes bigger than the team that they play for. For some reason our contract negotiations drag out into the season and into the media which just doesn't help the team jell.

In order to make a run these players have to pull themselves together. The coaching has never really been good enough to win in the playoffs. Players have to execute and win despite the coaching. Very hard to do.

The money and the media have ruined it. Social media has been a huge part of it.

Good lord, what's are the options. Like every team in NFL, Cowboys have players with expiring contracts. You can't let them ALL walk.......

It's interesting some fans have founded reasons to turn on every player getting new deals. First, it was DLaw, then Zeke and Jaylon Smith and it's obvious Dak and Coop are next.

I think it’s the way some of these players are getting the money. These agents are giving some bad advice. To hold out shoulder surgery was a bad choice and it hurt the team because he wasn’t 100% to start the season. Elliot holding out with 2 years left on his rookie deal was bad form as well. He stays in Cabo and comes in out of football shape. Both times JJ has given into this. This sits JJ and the organization up for future problems. I like the way the chargers FO handled the gordon situation.
