Are the Cowboys Tanking On Purpose?

This looks like a tank job, I find it hard to believe that any front office in the NFL is this incompetent.

Honestly, this looks like the front office has decided to use this season for the sole purpose of clearing cap and getting high picks for 2023 for when, presumably, Sean Payton will be the new head coach.

A team looking to go "all in" for a championship run dont make the moves the Cowboys are making.

Mike has a 5 year deal. He will be here as here all 5 years facts.

If this team misses the playoffs or goes one and done again, Fat Mike is gone.

They even talked about this on the Break and everybody (Eatman, Helman, Eagleton, Amber) all agreed that there is no question there will be a new head coach if this season ends just like last season.

They are definitely clearing cap. Tanking on purpose? I don’t think so. I think they truly believe they are “close”.

They believe they are great at drafting and can replace the production they are cutting that way.

They clearly were done with Coop as JJ made his displeasure known in the season. I think the same is true for Collins. Missing his drug tests and getting suspended burned whatever equity he had with the ownership.

They have definitely undermined McCarthy— whether intentional or not lol. The whole Jones family (as well as the team and fans) would be greatly served by taking a year or two off from speaking publicly.

Good points.

They are replacing players (or still trying to) with cheaper players who they feel have the same talent level as the guys with the big contracts. D-Law is the exception here because there is nobody on defense that can be the all-around player like he is. Anyway, I dont see that as tanking. Get rid of Dak, Zeke Zack Martin then yeah I would say they were setting up for a tanked season. But now? Nope. More mediocrity this season? Most likely. But tank? Nah.

This is a good question. I could go along with the possibility if Jerry wasn't so long in the tooth and seemingly desperately wanting a championship.

That said it certainly does look like we need to totally clear the cap of these players that we have overpaid and get as many draft picks as possible.

We are most definitely a team that needs to operate on young players with rookie contracts to get past the first round of the playoffs.

It's not with all teams but this team in particular players give a hundred percent to get a contract and then do as little as possible after they have garnered the big money.

I'm in belief for this team the more young players we have striving to get that big payday the better chance we have of moving further in the playoffs.

Thats a great point about how most of the players that have gotten big paydays have not lived up to those contracts.

Tank............had a fantastic season in a contract year, got pad, has done very little production wise afterwards.
Zeke............held out, got paid early, has been on the decline ever since and now is not even the best RB on the team.
Collins.........looked early on that he was going to be a star, got paid, has since regressed and now is seeking a trade.
Jaylon.........got paid, then proceeded to avoid as much contact as possible until he finally got released.
Dak.............demanded top money for a QB and well we all see how that has worked out. Had a QBR of 26 in playoff game.

So yeah, almost every player that has gotten big paydays here in Dallas has not lived up to them.

He had an out in his contract when Benson died. If Payton wanted to be HC of the Cowboys, he would have taken the job instead signing that last extension with the Saints. Jones undermined Parcells and MM. Don't you think top coaches see this and decide they want no of this circus?

Why get high draft picks for the saints?

If this is the case stop paying good players great contracts! These are all cap moves. Go look at Daks QBR with/without Cooper. It's scary. Cuts in half like 60 something to 30 something.

The team as constructed hit its ceiling. They can’t bring everyone back and expect to advance in the playoffs any deeper than they did. They can certainly make some changes without tanking, especially in the NFC East.

These clowns in the front office are incapable of that kind of long term thinking.

No, they aren't tanking. This is just our FO doing what our FO does. This is why you actually hire a GM who spends all his time focusing on GM but Cowboys fans get to be treated of yet more years of Jones boys playing real life Madden.

They shouldn't tank but, most likely will fall down the ladder next year. They still have a few "dead wood" players to get rid of next season as well starting with Zeke.

Zeke, Tyron, Martin will be 33, Lawrence will be gone, that whole offensive line will be new from last seasons and we will still have the biggest problem still here. The $40 million problem. Hows he gonna fair with an entire new line? Can't wait.
