The Cowboys were/are the original "America's Team." They got that nickname when they were at or near the top of the NFL. The nickname stuck and they will always have it.

Trouble is they are not living up to that nickname currently and haven't for a long time when it comes to winning.

Today they have some things going for them. They have the biggest stadium, the most fans, raise the most revenue, and claim the very top in total value as far as money goes. But does that matter in the end? That compares to an army that has the most men, the best equipment and the most money but never wins a major battle or war.

The Cowboys still have their nickname and always will. But will they ever have the major victories that earned them the nickname in the first place?

America’s Team is the Lakers. Way more fans and actually had recent success. They receive far more support from their league as well. If the NFL has to have a representative, I’d say the Patriots or Chiefs are probably more deserving than Dallas atp. You can count the number of Cowboys fans under 40 years old on one hand.

Sure, if sport popularity was not a factor, Lakers could grab that title. But basketball in general cannot even sniff footballs in ratings. So sorry, still the Cowboys, no matter how bad the Jones clan tries and ruin the team over time.

I think even if the Cowboys do not break through for another 10 years, they will still be America’s team. So many other team’s hate the Cowboy’s that all their fans kids who feel their dad loves their team more than them will become Cowboy’s fans to spite them lol.

This is a stretch. Teams don’t retain popularity without success. Mexican fans have been Jerry’s saving grace for the last 10-15 years. Without them, the fandom would have completely fallen off.

Why does this question seem to be asked every single year? The answer is obviously yes… Just based on ratings alone. Though Kansas City is quickly catching them there. I’ve always thought a better question was why do some think it’s special to be a fan of America’s team? If it was my local team, I think I would hate that…
